PREVIOUS - 01 In Search of Adventure
As morning arrives, a sound comes from the chimney of the kitchen, and out pops a gnome, barely able to squeeze down the vent, and the group parlays. The gnome, Orryn has seen a recent increase in Orcs in the area, and followed them to the stronghold. Orryn tried to gain entry via the tower, and found it locked, but located the vent and descended. He is interested in joining the group to find out if anything of interest is happening in Quasqueton, the group agrees, and then there were five.
The group continues exploring, following long, strangely shaped and curving passageways, when they finally pass a door, and explore the area within. First, they enter a passage where they trigger a trap, and the walls drop, and the floor tips, and all but one slides into the center, where a pit of hungry zombies wait for the living. K'ronk manages to cast a feather fall spell and makes his way to the door, where he attaches a rope to throw down to the group. Fortunately, the rest of the group fights off the undead, and scales the rope back to the corridor.
Next they encounter a room glowing green, and discover it is the former gardens of the complex, lit with magic from the ceiling, and overrun by giant fungus. They are quickly attacked by ferocious giant mushrooms who exude clouds of noxious spores. The group flees the room, but casts some oil flasks within and alights the room on fire. It destroys the myconids, and they examine the room, finding nothing but empty pools and the charred statues of the former inhabitants. They move on.
They come to a dusty library with strange bugs in cages lighting the room, and then encounter a pair of rooms with a strange crystal that teleports them from one to the other, creating great confusion. They proceeded to a room with small reptilian creatures - Kobalds which attack them, and they kill, but soon barge in on a lot of some others. A quick illusion allowed them to make haste away from their area without melee. They found a long storage room with a lever that released a trap outside the room with a gate that would drop from the ceiling, and later a maze of doors surrounded by crossbow slits for easy destruction of an enemy. They discovered a room to practice combat, littered with discarded armor and weapons, and a commode for both men and women which held more rats.
The group chanced upon the base of the tower, and searching carefully found a secret passage triggered by a lever in a floor grate. Although the room was protected by more undead, they were vanquished and a small treasure chest filled with gold was recovered. The group marched up the tower, exploring the rooms, finding little but an old map of the area, and ultimately found giant eagles at the top who Orryn could communicate with, but they told them little useful information, the eagle did tell them that there were some owlbears in the forest to the north, for some reason the group is fascinated with owlbears.
