Mgr David Silk R.I.P.

Mgr David Silk

1936-2023

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Mgr David Silk. Mgr Silk came to us at an uncertain time for the parish; we had recently been blessed with the arrival of a new priest, and were looking forward to a promising future under his care – but that was not to be. Fr Martin Rossman became seriously unwell after a few short months in post, and was unable to continue his ministry. Mgr Silk was asked to take up the reigns, a request he accepted with the grace and composure that was typical of him. He was steadfast in his stewardship, at Masses and at social occasions, adapting cheerfully, with his wife, Joyce, to the challenges and rewards of life in St Marychurch.

When Canon Michael Lock was appointed Parish Priest in May 2012, Mgr Silk graciously stepped aside, but continued to be a constant presence in the parish. He was an impressive advocate of his faith, and nurtured that faith in others with a careful hand. He was knowledgeable, erudite, and curious, yet never condescending in his intellect. He always saw the best in people, and we responded to that charming inclination. He will ever be remembered for his observance of the proper way to do things, for his gentlemanly demeanour – not at all belied by the twinkle in his eye – for his ready smile, dry wit, and unfailing compassion. He was loved, and will be missed.

Rest in peace, Fr David.
