We are extremely lucky to have a cave in our local area, so we decided to use this as our hook into Our Local area. Children drive past them on their way to school and we had lots of discussions on its possible history.
There are many different scientific based activities linked to caves - we decided to focus on Stone Age aspects (based on Royal Society of Chemistry Stone age topic web)
Possible activities
Stone Age
Ecosystems (Animals extinct from hunting and which alive now?)
Ecosystems (farming how might it affect our habitats?)
Animal classification
Stone Age boats (buoyancy)
Adaption and extinction (what adaptations would woolly mammoths need to survive now?)
Extinction theories
Sound pitch and volume (stone age man-made drums as part of religious rituals)
How does a drum make a sound?
Thickness of material
Different pots and bowls to make drums.
Light and shadows (scientists think that stone age man were interested in sun and moon.
Stonehenge
Shadows – how are they formed.
Stone age cave paintings (made by mixing powders and liquids)
Caves as shelters (how are caves formed?)
Natural resources (metals – how tools were made from metal in Bronze Age)
Expressive arts
Cave paintings
Drum music
Literacy
Vocabulary – stone age, Palaeolithic age and Mesolithic age
Science investigations as listed above
Numeracy
Database (animal classification)
DCF
Animal classification – database
Adobe creative – ecosystem work
