self-report. standardized scoring.
13 years and older (adolescent, adults, geriatric)
Arthritis, joint conditions, pain management, upper extremity musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain,
Outpatient, hand clinics, inpatient, acute settings.
To assess functional ability of the client’s upper extremity (hand, arm, shoulder) in various context through self-report measures in order to understand how to support function of upper extremity disability.
It asks questions that include ADL, IADL, work, functional mobility, social participation, and sensory issues (pain and “pins and needles”) associated with movement of the upper limb.
Compared to the DASH, the QuickDASH is the short form of the assessments and uses 11 items from the DASH but maintains high correlation with the DASH.
10 minutes. There are optional questions. Test is taken individually.
No training required. Client reads the directions and rates their level of difficulty on each activity stated on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being none and 5 being most.
QuickDASH form
Writing Utensil
Self-report for the last week on a Likert scale from 1-5,
The QuickDash has one page for the symptom and disability score that takes ([the sum of responses/n]-1)x25. n=number of completed responses. you cannot calculate the score if there is more than 1 missing response to an item.
There is another page for optional modules that assesses performance in work and sports/performing arts.
To score take ([the sum of responses/n]-1)x25. n=number of completed responses. you cannot calculate the score for the optional section with any missing items.
Scoring is on a range of 0-100 where 0 is “no disability” and 100 is “most severe disability.”
Criterion Validity:
Upper extremity Musculoskeletal disorders Criterion Validity: Moderate correlation with SF-12 (r = -0.44).
Shoulder pain criterion validity: High correlation with DASH (r = 0.98).
Neck and upper extremity criterion validity: Moderate correlation with PCS-12 (r = -0.44).
Chronic Pain criterion validity: High correlation with DASH (r = 0.98).
Test-Retest Reliability:
Musculoskeletal upper extremity disorders: Excellent (ICC = 0.93–0.99).
Shoulder Pain: Excellent (ICC = 0.90–0.94).
Neck and upper extremity disorders: Excellent (ICC = 0.93–0.99).
Chronic pain: Excellent (ICC = 0.90).
Hand clinic patients: Adequate (ICC = 0.68).
Shoulder, Elbow, and Wrist Arthroplasty Patient: Excellent (ICC = 0.93).
Minimal Detectable Change (MDC):
Upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders MDC: 11–17.18
Shoulder Pain MDC: 11.2
Chronic Pain MDC: 11.2
Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID):
Upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders MCID: 9.0–15.91
Shoulder pain MCID: 8.0
Neck and upper extremity disorders MCID: 10.0
Chronic Pain MCID: 8.0
Hand clinic patients: 8–15.
Easy and quick to administer, short form. convenient and demonstrates great correlation with original form DASH. Can be used by many healthcare professionals like occupational therapists, physical therapists, physicians, and researchers.
If more than 1 item is not answered by the client, it cannot be scored.
Although the QuickDASH is shorter than the DASH, the DASH can still be administered in a short amount of time (5 to 10 minutes) and may be more beneficial for a comprehensive look into the client's UE disability than the QuickDASH.
