The study area consists of four municipalities that are under the influence of the Oquirrh mountains and collectively shape the context of the greenway system. Plans and codes for the cities and townships are reviewed which help determine the future development of the open spaces and trails that exist or are proposed for the region. Kearns, Magna, and West Valley City have provided plans and few codes for parks and recreation plans as well as required open space for the future population.
Kearns
The main objective of the parks and open space plans of Kearn city is to maintain and protect current recreational facilities and adjust zoning to preserve existing parks and recreation spaces. Municipal Services District is the major stakeholder that is responsible for action of general plans. Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC), and Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District are other parties assigned to cooperate in the process.
Kearns has recently adopted a new General Plan in 2020. In this document, there are plans for green commercial corridors, recreation hubs, active transportation, and parks.

West Valley City
West Valley City has released a general plan in 2020 that states the need for new park development by 2035 and preservation of the natural open space and stormwater detention areas in the northwest part of the city. In addition, the city has an older version general plan visioning 2020 to provide 420 acres of parks by the year.
These plans can be reviewed here, pages 53-65.
Magna
Magna was recently incorporated as a metro township in 2017. Currently, the Salt Lake Municipal Services District is working with Magna on a draft 2021 General Plan to include existing conditions, feedback from the public, and plans for the future of Magna.
Included in this draft plan is information on access to parks, vacant lots and agricultural land, sidewalk plans, and goals for a parks and trails master plan.
The draft General Plan for Magna can be viewed here.
Taylorsville
Taylorsville's current general plan dates back to 2006. Plans for open space and trails in Taylorsville need to be updated.
Taylorsville's general plan is located here.
Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation
The document below provides some key points for the current plans for the Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation. The plans can be reviewed here.
Wasatch Front Regional Council Green Infrastructure Plan
In 2012, The Wasatch Front Regional Council put together a large-scale, green infrastructure plan across Salt Lake County. Although 9 years old now, this document holds valuable information and analysis.
The link to this plan is located here.
The area is lacking proper plans for the future development of the parks and open spaces. Due to the lack of current policies in this area, other plans and codes are reviewed to provide a foundation for the future analysis of the greenway system in the area.
This table features park standards based on the Manual of Housing and Planning and Design Criteria provided for vision 2020.
City of Raleigh, NC
North Carolina has several samples of greenway planning and the Raleigh city's recreational and cultural resources department has developed a greenway planning and design guide that provides objectives and design for an interconnected network of parks, trails, and open spaces. Some of the objectives to promote open space and accessibility through greenway systems are stated as follows:
Preserve natural characteristics of the land
Preserve wildlife corridors
Preserve riparian buffers as a means of protecting water quality
Preserve stream corridors to manage stormwater runoff
Provide buffers for multiple land uses
Provide opportunities for passive recreation
Provide shared-use trails for recreation and safe transportation routes
