At 8.30 pm all the participants were welcomed by the host school team at Nefeli Hotel and then they walked to the local Public Library where the headmaster Mr Petros Potetsianakis and Mrs Vivi Xoudalaki the director of the library welcomed all the guests, showing them the library , the old books. There were also some ice breaking activities among students of the different delegations. Finally the hosts organized a welcoming refreshment with typical Greek finger food.
There was a common meeting in the main square of Chania where the Greek team organized a series of games allowing all students to get in touch. Then the international group was divided into smaller mixed groups and each of them was guided by one Greek student who became a guide for one day (using the Service Learning methodology).
At midday the group joined and met at the local Municipality where the Mayor, Mr Simadirakis, his vice Mayor, Mr.Vardakis and Mrs Zervoudaki welcomed the delegation and talked with the students about topics linked to Crete and their activities pro -turism. Then they offered a book about Crete to the teachers.
The Italian delegation offered the book of their region Apulia as a sign of reciprocal friendship.
For lunch the delegation went to school.
A very rich buffet with typical Greek food was offered to the guests and then there was an amazing relaxing time with typical Greek songs and dances involving all the participants.
On Tuesday morning all Erasmus partners met at the Hotel Nefeli and went to Agia Lake to start working on the topic assigned: “Water”
At Agia Lake the group visited the Environmental Center of Vamos, where they were hosted by two excellent teachers. This is a public center established by the Ministry of Education and it offers different projects, seminars and workshops for students, teachers and other visitors. The guides explained about biodiversity, bird migration, the different ecosystems, water springs and especially they insisted on the word RESPECT: we do not have to save the planet, but save humankind by protecting the environment. The walk around this artificial lake was an inspiring experience, also enriched by using illuminated microscopes and binoculars.
After that, the group went to the Water Museum where they learned about the history of electrification in the Chania area promoted by Venizelos, who deeply believed in energetic autonomy for the island. The plant was working from 1928 to 2006, when it finished providing electricity to the region. After the visit, there were some simple experiments with electricity in small groups.
At school students had a workshop on mythological characters linked to water. In mixed groups, each of them deepened one character using the flipped classroom methodology and then in full session they presented their creative work. There were groups who acted, others who invented poetry, some others drew and animated their characters. They presented their work empowering their Public Speaking.
While the students were working, the teachers planned the Google Site, promoted the dissemination activity through the Blog and Instagram as a matter of fact the Italians and Spanish team have created a Blog and an Instagram account and they have posted their experience.
On Wednesday morning, 19th October, the international partner had an opportunity to visit the Water Bottling Company “ETANAP”. They could observe all stages of mineral water bottling starting from the mold - PET and finishing with the ready to transport water in palettes. Then they had a walk along the river Koiliaris. During that stroll they could admire beautiful views and Mediterranean nature, especially olive oil, lemon and orange trees. At the end of the walk they had a stop to taste traditional Creatan food at the local tavern.
Later on they went to Kournas Lake to see its beauty and purines.
In the afternoon they went to Rethymno where they walked along old steens in the Old Town having a stop to take photos and to enjoy local cuisine.
They finished the long day late in the evening enjoying the time they spent together.
On Thursday morning at 9 o’clock all Erasmus partners met at the chamber of commerce hall to have the session and workshop related to“Climate Change”.
The professor from the Technical University of Crete , department of chemistry & environmental engineering Mr. Koutroulis was invited to talk about climate change. He made a half an hour presentation and then he answered questions of teachers and students. Then the students had an interesting workshop. They were asked to think about ways of reducing the use of water, electricity and heating in their houses. They were separated into 7 mixed groups and discussed it for 15 minutes. The results were presented by a speaker from each group. They presented very interesting ideas showing that they are very much sensitized about environmental issues. It’s important to stress the use of the new methodologies they used: mixed group cooperative working but mainly Public speaking, empowering their English
The next activity was held at the Technical University. The group arrived there at 11.30 by bus and were welcomed by two professors from the school of chemistry & environmental engineering. A short video presenting the university was demonstrated to the group and then there was a chemistry lab session. The students went there into 2 groups and examined samples of water , measuring several aspects such as Ph , salinity , conductivity etc.
After the lab workshop the group went to the university cantine and had lunch. After leaving the university campus the group visited “Venizelos Graves”, the place where the great Greek politician Eleftherios Venizelos was buried. The place offers a panoramic view of the city and all participants had lots of photos.
At 7.30 the teachers met at the hotel and had a discussion regarding the next mobilities and other works that have to be done by the participating partners.
On Friday morning all Erasmus partners met at 10.00 at the Hotel Nefeli and departed for the new Archeological Museum of Chania. After a nice walk by the seafront promenade, the group reached the museum, where two Greek teachers guided the students through the exhibition. The students learnt about Chania Prehistory and enjoyed masterpieces from the archeological sites excavated in the Chania region, and those from the Ancient city of Cydonia. After that, the Polish team visited Eleftherios Venizelos Residence house where they could find out about the most prominent Prime Minister from Greece.
In the afternoon all the Erasmus partners met at school where they worked on the final topics and agreements. The hosts organized a farewell party during which all the participants received the certifications. In the end all the partners have agreed that the next meeting will be in Alcala de Henares, Spain from 24th to 28th of April. The teacher's team has planned some activities to be done as virtual meeting and defined the digital tools to be used for the final output (genially and Book Creator).
Everybody agreed that the mobility in Crete was well organized and that all the partners enjoyed staying there.
