Machinery Directive MD
Machinery specific CE marking requirements (MD)
The Machinery Directive (MD) define all laws that may apply to Industrial Machinery ecosystem, from design, manufacturing, transporting, commissioning, operating maintenance and dismantling.
Additional to this laws, we must apply technical concepts which are listed in the harmonized standards.(see below)
Machinery and Devices
The Machinery sector in Europe is an important part of the Engineering Industry. Machinery consists of an assembly of components, at least one of which moves, joined together for a specific application. The driving system of the machinery is powered by energy other than human or animal effort.
The machinery built after 1.1.1995 is called Machinery and is legally under the scope of the Machinery Directive (MD) and must wear CE Mark.
The machinery built previously to 1.1.1995 must be called Equipment amd is legally under the scope of the Work Equipment Directive (WoED).
The Machinery Directive
promotes the free movement of machinery within the single market in the EU
guarantees a high level of protection for EU workers and citizens
As it is a 'new approach' directive, it promotes harmonisation through a combination of mandatory health and safety requirements and voluntary harmonised standards. The machinery directive only applies to products that are to be placed on the EU market for the first time.
The machinery directive 2006/42/EC was published on the 9th of June 2006 and became applicable since the 29th of December 2009.
Today we must apply the 2006/42/CE version,
which was published on 2006 and now is under revision, once a new version will be approved needs 2 years until will be applicable

>> Harmonized standards to apply with the Machinery Directive
Additionally to the Machinery Directive (MD) we should fulfil the harmonized standards, which delivers technical details on the topics and gives to the users conformity to the MD.
Example: The Machinery Directive (law) will enforce you to install Emergency Stop system in each machine, the additional harmonized standards will help you to understand where, how, which types,....etc. technical details as color, sizes.....etc.
Once you selected the standard that you must apply in your machine from this list, you should purchase it from you national standards institute.
