Yes, I read. Not much, but I do. Hoping to hit that 52 in 52 week life. Can't wait for 2030
This book focuses on the life of Helena, the daughter of a man who had abducted her mother as teen to a remote cabin in the woods for over a decade in the marshlands of Michigan's Upper Peninsula .
It dwells upon her life from her present, trying to uncover the escape of her father from the penitentiary , with the presumed intention of finding his only child
as well as look into her backstory, as to how she was brought up in the Marsh, under her father's guidance. and how their relationship unfolds especially with her mother, as they eventually escape, soon with the arrest of their father, A native american who suffers from extreme narcissism ,And how she came to cope up in the modern world with her Jam and Jellies
In my honest opinion, I found the first half of the book to be rather boring for the majority of Helena's backstory, just seemed a tad bit too mundane for it to be of much interest to me. The book does give you a slight urge to know what happens further but nothing more than a tug.
Starting with Helena describing her normal post-abducted life, which soon throws you into the bush with her Dad escaping and her hunt to find him, the story throws her past after each chapter, which again, frankly speaking, is a bore to read, I do however like to mention that certain people do find this interesting, the tale of her abductor, but I am not those type of peoples. Helena as a child was more of a nuisance and a cringe to read through, the thought of such a child which still likely possible is a horror to think of.
Her father's narcissism was hard to read through at times, living in his bubble, the way he shaped and moulded her to care for him even subconsciously is so painful to know, makes you wonder about people who have it that way, that is those who never disregard or think otherwise from someone whom they look towards for guidance, Side talk, Helena and her father reminded me of a guy I went to school with who lived in his bubble that things are done in ways other than his own always used to fascinate him with that confused look on his face, uttering the word "interesting". Nothing harsh with him, just the ways some things were done,
The mom might just be my least favourite character from the first half of the story. Now I'm no expert in trauma and abductions survivors and I do understand that Jacob said no one is looking for her and everyone stopped caring, but when she went to the store to buy clothes with him, It wouldn't have hurt for her to say "𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘣𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘶𝘺", Afterall, the town is pretty small with next to no crime and something as significant as this would sure to stir up in everyone's minds, even if no one cares about her or not bothered looking for her, someone would have probably dialled the police with a phrase as what I mentioned would've been said, but maybe I'm wrong, maybe things would have gone far worse
The latter part of the story is where things start to spice up (this is coming from boring) With her on the hunt with multiple bodies being dropped by her father, including the guy in her house which she thought was her husband, with the author leaving us in suspense for another long backstory chapter.
The backstories started getting indulging to read through, with Jacob starting to teach her hunting and other wilderness skills such as using her national geographic magazine pages to wipe themselves. Moving on from butt wipes and baby skin gloves. Her life saw a huge shift with the sight of another family, A happy family on a trip at the waterfall. This part and going forth was my favourite part of the backstory with her eventually being a better finder than her father, and the lost driver was pretty sad, to say the least having been tortured by her father and alas killed by mercy at the end, The escape on the jetski was intense, but the way she went off midway and see her dog die was such a poor choice of action that it hurts to know that she still loves this man, and not want every part of his soul burnt through in their sauna.
The right before the end was a rather cringe-fest when she did not pull the trigger, and gave him the upper hand, saying words, I wish he rather not have (Nothing harsh just sooooo, bleh?) and him telling her his plans of him wanting to take her and her daughters to Canada to start afresh (I thought he meant this as taking her as his wife and have her daughters as his own, I emailed the author and she soon replied saying, In her mind, he was not right in the head, but also not a paedophile it wasn't the case but rather continue the same relationship but with him being a grandfather now as well).
Helena escaped later on accidentally' falling off a cliff and got the upper hand on him which he said his final words and well,
She remembered not to wait in front of the cut( Okay I took a while to start this book review and forgot that exact line, but you get the point)
She lived happily ever after
the end
but not until the germans rushed in towards Upper Pennsylvania
"Oh Jacob" their large figures yelped
Helena saw this from a distance and rushed inwards to her car where she opened her briefcase to take out a key with a single button on it, embalmed with a logo of something with a face, Helena made no haste and clicked the button
It took only a matter of seconds until the Decepticons scrambled through from the marshlands
'Decepticons attack"Screamed lord Megatron
As they shot out shrapnel from their arms and as the germans, started to retreat, Helena could only think of her dad, as to how she misses him and the way they used to be and hoped that he's in a better place now. Running from the warzone that is the farmer's market, Stephans trips on a muddy golden teapot, intrigued by its shine and not minding the screams of hundreds around him, Stephan breathes warm air on the pot and shines it with his jacket.
Not moments later, that a Will Smith, the genie comes out speaking with an accent that could be recognized as Indian or Arabian, The family, not having been anywhere besides The marsh couldn't decipher which.
"M 44 Arabia' the genie said
'what?' The daughters exclaimed
'F?' Will smith ejaculated
The family still confused, begs will smith to grant them one wish to which he agreed upon
The world suddenly turned pitch black, and a misty cloud started to appear before their eyes. a mould forming
Stephan starting to breathe heavily as he realises that this mould is starting to look like the one person who could take it all way.
'i had to' Helena whispered
As jacobs fleshly body slowly starts to form, he inches closer and closer to them . with each step, making him more whole, until he stops a foot away from Stephan and looks into his eyes with a mix of hate and love.
'I'm sorry, my child for everything I have done' and then stares at the two girls with hope "for I shall make it up to you all"
His face starts twitching and wide long razor-like teeth zoom out from his mouth, eyeing Stephan he jumps on him chewing his upper body straight off.
'Oh no! ITS A LEVIATHAN' Will smith who stands behind them screams
'PAPAAAA' The girls cry
Helena stood their quietly shocked until she heard Kansas's Carry on my wayward son play, which got louder and louder
a sudden hit by a chevy 67 turns the leviathan to roadkill and out the car comes two tall individuals
'The names Sam and Dea........Wait, Oh crap I think we hit the wrong timeline Dean'
Dean pulls out the executioner and ends the story from there
Did this extra 23 minutes of typing all these extra bits, mean much for this Book review? No
Was it worth the type? Yes
Great your here, Another side quest for I shall. The Life of the cluttered becomes one I not desire, The life of One is rather one that i strive yet to be (Hint: Go to Dopamine detox page and find and click the button, you'll know it when you see it)
Harry Potter(the movie) was probably my first movie that i realised, which was an adaptation from a book.It didn't hit me until after a considerable long time after I watched it, and longer for me to accept that it was, either way , I wasn't a particular fan of the series over the years, being more of a Lord of the rings fan with hits me just differently(Again, the movie ,not the book. I hadn't started reading any other book besides A LOT monthly, local comics until mid 2015, when a friend , Manu P. Ajay Lent me down Wonder, which was amazing at the time.)
Harry Potter...I'm not going to write an introduction as i'm sure most of you know something about this ,either way to sum this in a sentence or two, the book takes us on the adventure of Harry , a boy who was orphaned as a baby and made to live with his uncle and aunt, the Dursleys. His unhappy decade with them and their son, had soon turned around with an acceptance letter he had received to join Hogwarts school of Magic Witchcraft and Wizardry. The letter delivered by Hagrid a gentle giant ,came by a surprise to Harry which soon finds himself in the midst of popularity for the reason he was orphaned. His new life as a wizard begins with the discovery of the books title
Okay.....................I wrote an introduction.
It took me awhile to start the book off, knowing the plot and outcome of most of the twists, but I forced myself to open it and read one chapter. It was good not going to lie.
Just coming from reading The Da Vinci Code and The Marsh King's Daughter, it was a relief to read something so easy on the eyes ,where I didn't have to check out the meaning of a word I don't know, every other page or so
The Dursleys rude and ethnocentric mindset was anything but cringy worthy with Dudley reminding me of a fat power ranger gone bad, of all things. The Chapters uphill Hagrid came were in my regard the most boring parts of the book, but to its credit, there were quite a few parts which turned out to be funny.
Hagrid’s arrival could not be more sooner with storms high waves messing about the Dudley’s boat, all so he can give him the letter he was bestowed upon. Reading the lines in the voice of Hagrid was quite enjoyable, which made me glad I had watched enough Harry Potter to know how everyone looks and sounds like, which further enhances the immersion of the book.
Reading through the rest of book was quite enjoyable, the fact that they have a banking system and safety deposit caves and the more casual things like buying books for school was interesting. Platform 9¾ and the entire train trip was where they first met Hermione, a girl in a family of dentists. She is not really what I expected to be. Much nerdier and suck up than I recalled. But their moments were enjoyable and the being friends over a troll win is going in my top 10 favourite part of the book (This is the only part that exist so far, so its #1)
One thing that bugs me is how fast everyone were to accept back the people who were in One-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Name’s (It’s not for effect, I just forgot how to spell his name) side. People like Malfoys parents literally were in team V a decade ago. And If Slytherin students often results in Bad people, WHY IS IT STILL THERE? Should not V be their Epiphany that, that house is not good. I just kept thinking about it after Malfoy had commented that If Harry were not careful, he would get the same faith as his “no good’ parents or something like that. Even if I never watched the Harry Potter movies ,I’d call it that MALFOY TURNS BAD, and I cant recall who else, but I have the feeling that most of the students from the House Slytherin turn bad as well (To the person reading this who knows the answer, and Especially to the person who asked me to write this opinion ,I DO not what to know the answer, It was not an invitation to treat to come and answer, it was just a simple guess, So don’t you even consider it)
I am yet to be done with the book with just a chapter left but was too eager to finish this off and I cannot believe I took almost two hours to write barely two pages of my thought. Hopefully, that can be reduced by Book 7:P
Edit:I am done with this book ,and it was quite a relaxing read.I really enjoyed the ending and the plot twist with Quirrel being the bad guy with Voldo's face in his back(which after reading it, i can vaguely remember the scene in the movie) ,which i didn't see coming was a joy to read nonetheless. Snape's hatred for Harry which turned out to be him trying to save him felt a tad bit cliche but either way interested in how their relationship goes forth in the latter books. I was down to see that, Slytherin had won the house cup ,half expecting that cliche end with everything being turned the right way for the good guys, and alas it did , with Gryffindor earning 170 points and winning the cup beating slytherin's 7 year streak. Overall this book was really a great read, that i would recommend anyone.
.........................................................................
Quidditch was a really interesting part of the book, explaining how the game works and plays, which sounds kind of fun reading it (besides the part when they mentioned that one game has lasted months). The semi-finals with Gryffindor V Slytherin, the part specifically with Snape Casting a spell to Harry’s Broom kind of confused me later on, after they had done their exams with Anti Cheating Quills, I mean surely some sort of similar Anti Cheating policy should have been enacted for a game as old as Wizard time.
Now reading that, you already might be annoyed to the type of commentator I am. I am sorry to complain about a fictional Novel but, If I am putting my thoughts out, that is one of them.
Do you know how much easier life would be if the wizards and witches embraced “muggles”? Yes, we would ask for their help in so many of our problems, but it would be mutually beneficial for this to happen. Imagine the things all the things that could have been done if the magic world had a telephone, Think of all the savings that could have been made using that rather than an owl, poor wizards who can't afford Owls and want fast communication could have done so much. Think if Hogwarts had a camera and security system, think of all the people that could have been saved. Just think of the possibilities that could have come about with a basic handgun. Dark magic.
Okay I understand If, that DID happen, you would not have much of a story to tell. So, I just assumed there is a good reason why the two do not mix.
Did I enjoy the story? Yes, quite a lot. Do prefer the HP series over LOTR and the Hobbit series as a whole ? Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, however I feel, that I might prefer this 'book' series over an epic as LOTR mainly for the reason as , It's easy on the eyes, I can't truly compare it without reading both of the series so ask me this question in five years(hopefully)
This would have probably been my gateway into reading, if i wasn't stubborn with the thought of Harry Potter being boring as a book , or books being boring in general,I did however enjoy reading the snippets of stories and poems from my school textbook How that wasn't enough for me to get a good book to read? I shall never know (Well, I do actually but I'll end this off there)
I am not going to write any fanfic even if it were for jokes, like I did the last, because god knows how much already exists, and the things people have come up with for a 11-year-old boy.
These half baked reviews are here as to push me to just finish them off, It took me quite a bit to write them and i dont want to end up forgetting anythiing, So i hope id finsh this soon bofore anyone notices these, if you do , im sorry
Ivy League schooled professor Robby Langdon , wakes up in a hospital after being shot, the night prior. Two doctors next to him with of one them being a girl who he keeps describing in intense detail about how she looks and smells throughout the period of her existence in the story.
Confused as to where he is, he discovers quite soon that he's suffering with short term amnesia rendering the past few nights a blur and finding out, that there's a very deadly assassin after him for reasons he'll never know (or will know, idrk I can't recall)
The plot soon dives into the fact that he and brooks(the nurse) is earth's only hope of saving the world from a deadly virus (Which always sounds so strange, i mean just a handful of people who always has to save the entire planet) created by this guy who likes to play around with germs
He partners up with the "random" nurse and they both soon discover things about each other that are very convenient for the plot of the story and go off to gruesome entrails from deadly soy to a plane that gives you air sickness.
This review is about a month after i read the book and writing this all from my memory, so most of what i remember is the jist of it all
Okay ,so I had some high expectations for reading this after finishing Da vinci's code.
It took my about four months all in all to finish this book off, at a few points I stopped reading entirely cause I lost the momentum at start to push myself to do so, I just kept reading at terrible times which made me associate it with the book and just made me put it down. I eventually powered through and made myself read it, The book was initially a bit of a borefest at the latter start but eventually came up to be quite exceptional and made me want to read more after every page.
I wasn't really that much of a fan of how the book suddenly put you in the deep with Langdon being waking up in the hospital, and the erie dreams of a silver haired woman with piles of dead bodies over her was very vivid and frankly really creepy (I guess it served its purpose). I could already say that Brookes was going to the Doctor's companion, for this book after the first few chapters.
The latter start of the book where the two were running away from bruder in the garden felt extremely prolonged to me and just made me put the book down for weeks at a time, going back to it ,a it didn't seem as bad as i made it out to be, but at the description of certain places was confusing at times and didn't help much in visualize how they managed to hide,, such as when the Bruder were looking for the two when they where stuck in the underground cavern.
Skipping past towards the middle, the whole plot just went and killed my mind after finding out that Brooks was in fact double crossing Robert and using his premeditated amnesia against him. That moment threw me off completely (besides that ninja kick to the chest to the agent) when it was revealed what Sienna Brooks, first name was.
I was so giddy after knowing her name was Felicity ,ahhhh brought be back to the days of Felicity smoak and the times when arrow was good.
She even managed to fail this city and let the virus loose, She's should be happy that Oliver stopped taking hits from his list
FS2080 such a dope thing to refer to themselves, I've looked up on transhumanism soon after reading about it in the books and frankly in for it , maybe not too hyped about editing our genes ,which if im not wrong is being done today, but with heavy scrutiny and tight government regulations. (CMIIW)
Another mind-wow was that the virus has been released to the public, a week before and all the book was basically just a plot filler that ended with nothing.
The entire world with only a third being able to populate, I keep thinking to myself, how it Thanos would have been so much more successful if he had done this rather than killing off half the universe in a snap. No One would really care as much as they wouldn't have any loss to fight for, and this would be a far better solution in the long run,a sustainable stable population rather than one which could overpopulate again , in the next 500 or so year. For someone who calls himself a long term planner, he really didn't think it through.
I was kinda hoping something bad would happen like they evacuate the city or something but this was definitely far better than what i hoped for, call me sadistic but we both know ,we both were kinda rooting for Thanos to snap his fingers and see the destruction of what would happen.Negativity bias
You'd rather click on a video of an earthquake destroying a city block than a child recovering from cancer, (click here to see a child crying of hunger)
The ending was nice and subtle, and glad it didn't just cut off with virus is out ,now bye bye story over.
But guessing from this being the second dan brown book i read and considering it came a decade after the first book i read(The D code) ,I presume all his books , or at least the ones in between these two follow the same issue of robert being the only one to do something along with a girl to keep things unnecessarily romanticized while there being a major plot twist with one of the characters you thought you knew, actaully being the Antagonist .
Now it's going to be just a matter of Who that character is.
Season 15 of Supernatural, with it being the last season
And with no reported Spinoff like unlike a certain other cash cow.
YOU ALREADY KNOW WHOSE NOT DYING IF THERE GOING TO MAKE A SPINOFF WITH SAID CHARACTER. it made me so annoyed when the homecoming trailer was shown months before endgame released. It could've been a december release and made the news of the movie known after endgame.
Who knows what supernatural season 15 will hold. Something major already had happened last week which made me strike a nerve, and the new episode comes in a few hours , its 521 AM , i've been typing for the past hour.Im going to end this off here.
Ready player dives deep into an alternative near future 22 years later in the year 2040s where most of the world is in war and poverty ,with Zorbist's virus failing to control the population.
Everyone uses the Oasis, a virtual environment which users go on to socialise and do literally everything from going to school to being batman, and to forget about the horrible state of the planet they live in.
With the passing of the creator of the Oasis, James Halliday has set up a Quest on his will that who ever finds and tasks out 3 keys and gates, that he has personally hidden across the vast oasis ,will not only be rewarded by getting his multi centibillion fortune, but will be the owner of the oasis.
IOI, a Multinational conglomerate and Internet service provider try to win the game at whatever means necessary in order to use their power for evil and charge users to use the oasis and to advertise on the oasis. (Doesn't sound as bad but it is,once you understand how much the Oasis is apart of people's lives)
Wade watts, a young schoolboy born growing up using oasis, tries to win Halliday's game in order to leave the slums he currently lives in, with his abusive aunt and her partner.
5 years later without any sign of the first key, makes everyone lose hope on Holidays quest until a latin class changes everything
I was initially a bit skeptical buying this book considering I had already seen the movie. But I've heard often on about how books are generally better than movies and so I wanted to give this a try. The movie was a CGI masterpiece by the way.
------------------------
The start was absolutely amazing, having a much more deeper and clearer backstory about Wade and how the earth went to clutz. The story about IOI was a bit confusing in the movie as to what exactly they were.
I'm really enjoying how the book is jam packed with extra information about everyone. I literally couldn’t keep the book down, I went through 70 pages straight(Which in my terms is almost unheard of) and only forced myself to keep it down as I had other work to do.
The whole adventure has been completely turned around in the movie with it having a much more straightforward simple approach. The book however so far has been amazing with a completely different approach for the keys(some references are a bit confusing its but its explained well).
Having watched the movie first was great help in the read to understand and visualize everything and going from a movie I wished was longer and had more to it, it was as though this book has been a gift from halliday himself (I told myself I wouldn’t write anything cringy but here we are)
Introduction of Art3mis's character was really well laid out with, your blogger crush who is really famous in the OASIS, being the person you just beat at joust, and i'm a total fan of the zing( I thought the word was cute until the second movie, then it was just plain overused) between the two. The movie was so in your face with them being like they do this every other day, I get that it's in the OASIS but still. The book feels way more natural as to how a geek would be in a situation. Slowly chatting each other up every week and increasing the frequency until the start hanging out together every day at a chat room.
The fact that something like this could very well exist and that too even possibly before the 2040s is making me so pumped up while reading every new development and the history of the OASIS, we already are on the verge of High PPI(Pixels per inch) Displays and eventually have high refresh rates to match the real world, I cant wait for immersion technology to advance to the point that the entire periferial vision can be covered by a screen or as the book would do, a low light laser to the retina. The technology is getting better nad better with each iternation and the Oasis such as many fanfictions , will soon turn into an everyday reality
I regret reading negative reviews of this book(Why do I read negative ones you may ask? Well I wanted to see if it were possible for ,someone to ruin something I really enjoy. Weird I know) Everyones opinion of how the author was a horrible author and wrote his book in a narcissistic manner got to me for awhile (15 minutes max)
