Costs will vary widely based on what you already own, your preference for new or used gear, and your budget. If you're already active in outdoor activities like alpine scrambling, backpacking, or cross-country skiing, you may have much of the necessary clothing, footwear, and camping gear. In that case, your purchases will mostly be limited to technical climbing gear—harness, belay device, helmet, ice axe, carabiners, runners, etc.
Below are rough estimates to help set realistic expectations for your expenses. Remember, climbing, like any passion, isn't cheap. However, you can significantly reduce costs by using gear you already have, borrowing, renting, or shopping wisely. Locally we have used gear stores, we also recommend checking out the used gear sections of more popular brands online, or second hand retailers as well. Consider buying used gear to save money, but always purchase safety-critical items (like webbing, harnesses, and ropes) new.
As a Mountaineers member, you can access significant discounts on new gear through pro deals—check the "Gear Deals" section of the Member Benefits page.
Your gear is YOUR GEAR. Mark it with tape or paint to avoid mix-ups.
