CAEP R1.1: Apply knowledge of learner development and learning differences to create safe and supportive learning environments.
(Narrative): During my 2020-2021 clinical placement, I spent time in a fifth-grade classroom that was hybrid, or half virtual, half in person. Since students remained in their seats most of the day, the day began with a bit of fun. Each morning at 9 am, one of the three fifth-grade teachers would select a Just Dance video to share with the students. Eighty students and three teachers spent the next three minutes dancing out of their chairs while still respecting social distancing requirements.
(Reflection): This activity, although brief, stimulates the students and raises energy levels. It gets them ready to learn and creates a positive environment to start the day. Engaging activities like these also serve as great "brain break" ideas for students to "get their silly's out" before focusing again on the next task.
