INTASC Standard #6 Assessment: The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.
6(e) The teacher engages learners in multiple ways of demonstrating knowledge and skill as part of the assessment process
(Narrative): During the week of Thanksgiving, the Kindergarteners spent time learning about the pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Videos were presented about how the pilgrims lived, including a video created by Scholastic that depicted pilgrims of kindergarten age and how they washed clothes, played games, hunted for food, etc. After watching the video, the class compared modern life to pilgrim life and made turkey hats to celebrate the holiday. Once the turkey hats were made, the class lined up and shared what they learned about the first Thanksgiving with the surrounding classrooms.
(Reflection): Even though the community included adjoining classrooms, the children demonstrated knowledge of people who lived differently and showed multiple ways of applying the content they had learned.
