CAEP R1.4: Engage in professional learning, act ethically, take responsibility for student learning, and collaborate with others.
(Narrative): As an assessment for "Educational Psychology", a children's book was analyzed in aspects of community, diversity, culture, and the benefits of reading the literature in the classroom. Fry Bread, written by Kevin Noble Maillard and Illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal, tells the story of a Native American family teaching children of all races how to make the fry bread recipe dating back to elder tribes. The story includes illustrations of art, hairstyles, clothing, and utensils from Native American culture, and the elders educated the children on the origins of the recipe. The food was initially leftovers found after the Americans restricted the original food supply. The book concluded with forgiveness and the elders welcoming ALL people into their culture.
(Reflection): This story would be a beneficial lesson in the classroom because it promotes the growth and acceptance of unique individuals and their cultures.
