I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream (1995)
Synopsis: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is based on the book by Harlan Ellison with the premise that the three international superpowers, USA, Russia and China, secretely developped a system of computers to dispute a global war too complex to be supervised by human minds. The american supercomputer, Allied Mastercomputer, develops self-consciousness and absorbs its enemies, redefining himself as AM (I think, therefore I am, cogito ergo sum). Due to its hatred for humanity, it starts to kill the world population, with the exception of 5 people who shall be tortured for eternity to pay for humanity's crimes.
The game is a point-and-click horror adventure with a simple system. The player must solve a series of puzzles and make decisions on the characters' fate. Your actions have a direct implact on the events of the game, leading to one ending out of seven and impacting AM's views on humanity. It is notoriously difficult to obtain positive results and each character is nuanced.
Synopsis. A station located on international waters is invaded by terrorists. They demand money in exchange of the live of the president of USA who is being held hostage. The special agent Raiden is in charge of dismantling the terrorist cell and rescuing the president.
At first sight, the game appears to be a generic action narrative, however, as the story unfolds, it is revealed that the nature of the situation is directly related with an A.I going rogue and virtual simulation, so the lines between real and simulation starts to blur. In a way the game predicts the ascension of algorithms and its impact on our sense of free-will and human thought, also contrasting with machine learning and machine thinking. This A.I questions openly the player, breaking the fourth wall and revealing the nature of the illusion of gaming and its ludic pleasure. Additionally it proposes serious debate over the mass production of digital content, virtual reality replacing and gamifying ours. In a sense, the game indicates a future where A.I eventually might become a cultural curator of humanity, controlling the fundamental unity of cultural development, also known as Memes, a concept theorized and coined by the researcher Richard Dawkins, so the AI would shape culture and human thought.
Synopsis: In the near future, androids are replacing humans in many undesired jobs. The game accompanies three androids that develop self-conscioussness and break their programming: 1. Kara, a housekeeper and nanny. 2. Markus, a caretaker of an aged millionaire artist. 3. Connor, a detective of android related crimes. As the story develops, the characters start to develop self-consciousness and rebel, fighting for their rights.
The game illustrates a future where machine and artificial intelligence is explored and develops class conscioussness leading to a revolution. In this sense, the game poses the question of if A.I is able to think and seem human, how would society structure itself? Would that lead to social problems of worker's rights not only for humans but for machines?
