Wantok is Tok Pisin for “one talk”, and refers to the language of the tribe or clan that a person belongs to. The Wantok system is a traditional welfare system that evolved from these tribal roots; as a supporting mechanism for tribal members less able to looks after themselves. It evolved to fulfill a societal need: to ensure a social safety net that made sure none went hungry or homeless.
But the Wantok system has now become the albatross around PNG’s neck. Coupled with the payback system, there is now a societal expectation that wantoks who gain a position of responsibility are expected to look after fellow, perhaps less fortunate, wantoks. And saying no is NOT an option, not if one wants to maintain a position of respect within the community.
This phenomenon has led to money being siphoned out of the businesses to meet never-ending wantok obligations. This is also a malady the Diocese has to continually contend with..
