01:07 stressing a little phrase
01:08 that I didn't pay too much attention to at the time:
01:11 "You never know what the future holds."
01:14 Meanwhile, in my seven-year-old mind,
01:17 I was thinking, we were going to get to summer camp in Miami.
01:21 (Laughter)
01:22 Maybe it was going to be even better,
01:24 and we were going to go a little further north, to Orlando,
01:27 where Mickey Mouse lived.
01:29 (Laughter)
01:30 I got really excited.
01:32 My dad, however, had a slightly different plan.
01:35 Frоm Caracas, he he sent us to Brainerd, Minnesota.

01:41 Mickey Mouse was not up there,

01:44 and with no smartphone, no Snapchat, or Instagram,
01:47 I couldn't look up any information.

01:51 and one of the first things I noticed
01:53 was that the other kids' hair was several shades of blonde,
01:56 and most of them had blue eyes.
01:59 Meanwhile, this is what we looked like.
02:03 The first night, the camp director gathered everyone around the campfire
02:07 and said,
02:08 "Kids, we have a very international camp this year;
02:12 the Atencios are here from Venezuela."
02:14 (Laughter)
02:15 The other kids looked at us as if we were from another planet.
02:19 They would ask us things like,
02:22 "Do you know what a hamburger is?"
02:24 Or, "Do you go to school on a donkey or a canoe?"
02:27 (Laughter)
02:28 I would try to answer in my broken English,
02:31 and they would just laugh.
02:32 I know they were not trying to be mean;
02:34 they were just trying to understand who we were,
02:37 and make a correlation with the world they knew.
02:40 We could either be like them,
02:41 or like characters out of a book filled with adventures,
02:44 like Aladdin or the Jungle Book.
02:47 We certainly didn't look like them,
02:49 we didn't speak their language,
02:51 we were different.
02:52 When you're seven years old, that hurts.
02:55 But I had my little sister to take care of,
02:58 and she cried every day at summer camp.
03:01 So I decided to put on a brave face,
03:03 and embrace everything I could about the American way of life.

02:28 Yo intentaba responder en mi inglés deficiente.

02:32 Sé que no intentaban ser rudos,
02:34 sólo estaban intentando entender quiénes éramos
02:37 y hacer una correlación con el mundo que conocían.
02:40 Podíamos ser como ellos,
02:41 o como los protagonistas de un libro de aventuras,
02:44 como Aladdín o El Libro de la Selva.
02:47 Ciertamente no nos parecíamos a ellos,
02:49 no hablábamos su idioma;
02:51 éramos distintos.
02:52 cuando tienes siete años, eso lastima.
02:55 Pero tenía que cuidar de mi hermana pequeña
02:58 y ella lloraba todos los días en el campamento de verano.
