You Taught Me This

You Taught Me This
When you taught me to smilegently when men complimented my spirityou were really teaching me about complacency:about my role in the home, how to cook a warm meal,to make those strong hospital corners.
When you taught me to smileand walk away from pats on the bottom,a finger drifting down the small of the back, elegantly walk back and away from a situation, you were really teaching me that it was acceptable.
When you taught me to smilewith my mouth closed, teeth clenched,to grin and bear it,that this is how the world works, and it has happened to me too.
