Materials Thermodynamics Lab

【About Us】

Materials thermodynamics Laboratory in the Chemical Engineering Department, National Tsing Hua University is supervised by Professor Sinn-wen Chen. Materials thermodynamics and phase equilibria are our specialized field. Thermodynamics, materials science and mass transport are the core of our knowledge. Our research interests are studying phase equilibria, phase transformation and thermodynamics of inorganic materials. The knowledge is then applied to the understanding of materials systems and manufacturing processes.

The materials under investigations are thermoelectric materials, electronic solders, and photovoltaic materials. Soldering is critical for electronic products. Thermoelectric and photovoltaic materials are crucial for sustainable development and energy issues. Major research efforts include determinations of the isothermal sections, isoplethal sections and liquidus projections of these materials systems, both experimentally and by model calculation using the CALPHAD approach. Furthermore, our research efforts also include investigations of electromigration effects at the solder joints, thermoelectric properties of promising thermoelectric materials, and the interfacial reactions in the thermoelectric, electronic soldering, and photovoltaic products. Currently, we have one Ph.D, nine master students.
