History

Co-Founders Laura Camila Rivera & James Lyons IV came together to respond to the need for a dedicated forum within the University framework devoted to bringing Communities of Color at Northeastern under one roof to discuss matters related to our collective liberation and success at a predominantly white institution (PWI). After being connected through Cultural & Spiritual Life's Empower Retreat, Rivera & Lyons developed the idea to expand monthly town halls into something radical. They created an organization that now serves to redefine the entire sociopolitical atmosphere at Northeastern and thus alter the overall ecosystem towards a more just and equitable model for Students of Color and other marginalized communities.

The Northeastern Student of Color Caucus was founded on February 28th, 2019 through the passage of Constitution Article I. The Caucus seeks to actively apply critical race theory to higher education, starting #HereAtNU. So far our endeavors include working with campus partners such as Northeastern's Student Affairs Department to move all of the University's current grievance/reporting forms to the Student Life website as we begin efforts to create a centralized grievance form on myNortheastern, expanding and fully defining the Coalition for Northeastern Student Organizations of Color (CNSOC), and managing the Task Force Combating White Supremacy and Fascist Ideology on behalf of a multitude of student organizations invested in the matter.

The Caucus, comprised of the General Assembly & CNSOC, spent its first semester building our governing structure and now we are ready to effect true change. Students interested in getting involved can join one of our Caucus Committees, or get involved on the Secretariat as an acting Secretary or Chief Officer. We are ready to fight for your and our collective liberation.
