Reading

Reading Nordic books:

  • Students read Nordic books for a few weeks while they are learning about the Nordic countries. A special reading log for the Nordic books reading is supportive.

  • In the reading log the students must write the name of the book they are reading and color the authors national flag. The students can give a book review by coloring stars. If they thought the book was boring they skip coloring the stars but if they like the book a lot they can color three stars.

  • It's important to gather information in some kind of form about how much students have read all together.

  • Students can receive a flag after reading and the classmates can put the flags together on a specific place. If the book is from Sweden the student gets a Swedish flag. The flags get bigger according to the book size. The flags can be in three sizes (smallest less than 100 pages, medium size 100-200 pages and large over 200 pages). On the page Flags the teacher can copy a flag from each country an expand them. There must be an agreement between the students teacher and the school librarian about the flags installation e.g. put them on a bar graph /map in the library or in the student's classroom.

  • When the Nordic reading is complete it's fun to have a party. Catering and decorations can be connected to the country the students read most of the books from.

My favorite Nordic book:

  • The aim is to encourage students to recommend books for other students.

  • The best books, poster. Translate it to your language and save.

  • When students return books it's best to ask if they want to recommend the book. If so you can take picture of the book or find the cover on the internet and print it out. Put the image of the book cover in a prominent place at the library.


​The titles, original language:

  • The aim is to make students curious and have fun to read book titles in other Nordic languages. They guess the book name in their translated language.

  • The students do this work at the library. They choose one translated book from Nordic countries from the shelves. The find out what the book is called in its original language. They write the original name on a folded paper. Inside the fold they write the translated name and the author's name. At last they paste the author's national flag next to the original name.
