Mapping

Aims: The students learn about the Nordic Countries and their different cultural symbols such as flags and others.

Preparation:

  • Get a big map of the Nordic Countries. On this page you see these two maps: https://www.scanmaps.dk/0000446 & https://www.scanmaps.dk/0000843

  • Find flags and other items from each of the Nordic countries. We included Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Faeroe Island, Greenland Åland Islands and the Simian flags in our Nordic Mapping Game.

  • It´s good to find four items from each country, may be more or less on the map. From Denmark we used: The Danish flag, Roskilde Cathedral (the participating school is situated in Roskilde), a miniature statue of H.C. Andersen, a small LEGO figure and an electric windmill. It is best to have actual things, but for some items, it might be necessary to have pictures of the things.

  • Keep all the flags and items in a box or similar, so the items are removed from the map every time someone has played the game.

  • You can find a idea and the correct placement for all the things on following pictures and in each country links below.

  • If you and your students like this game the preparation will likely never be over. It´s always a place for one new item.

The game:

  • The students have to place the flags and things on the correct countries. Let them work together in pairs/small groups and discus their knowledge of the different countries and items.

  • When they have placed all the flags and items on the map, remove the things that are placed wrongly.

  • Let them try again, and talk to them along the way. You might be able to help them in the right direction. Notice that some items can belongs to more than one country for example the puffin that is popular in Iceland and the Faro islands. Both solutions are right.

  • Once they students have finished placing all items correct (maybe with your help), applaud then for a good solution.

  • Remember to collect all the flags and items in the box, so the next students starts with an empty map.

  • You can also use this idea as one of more activity and group of kids can collect point for each activity.
