Kayla Phelps, MD, MPH

Critical Care

About Me: I'm a PICU Attending at CHNOLA and Assistant Professor at LSU. I grew up in Kansas City (Go Chiefs!) and moved to New Orleans for undergrad at Tulane. I fell in love with the city and stayed for medical school. I followed my husband to Michigan for my training after he got a job with the Detroit Pistons. After I completed my PICU training, it was his turn to follow me back! He now happily works remotely and we're so thrilled to be back in NOLA. We have two little boys and are in full on busy working parents mode.

Medical Degree: Tulane University, New Orleans, LA

Residency: Pediatrics at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI

Fellowship: (if applicable): PICU at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI

Interests: I'm interested in health disparities, particularly in better understanding if and how health disparities are perpetuated within the healthcare system. I research the impact of social determinants of health on severity of illness on presentation to the PICU, PICU morbidity and mortality, and post-PICU outcomes.

Fun Fact: I like to do the Rubix cube to de-stress.

Top 3 Strengths: Connecting with families, team building, creating a safe space for learning
