Staff Recommendations: 

FEMA survey data estimates the construction of 1131 Bartholomew Street to be between 1900 and 1910. The property does not appear on the Sanborn Fire Insurance map until 1908.The applicant is requesting retention of double doors installed on the side elevation. The doors were installed in 2018 without a permit and replaced a non-historic window. The style of the installed doors is more commonly associated with Mediterranean Revival or Arts and Crafts  architectural style rather than a traditional shotgun. The Guidelines note that door styles typically correspond to the architectural style of the building, with some examples reflecting more high-style influences and others representing simpler interpretations. The Guidelines also state that paired or French doors are common on historic storefronts, though they are not historically typical for this building type.

While the doors are not characteristic of a shotgun residence, they are located on the side elevation and are minimally visible from the public right-of-way. Given their limited visibility and the fact that they replaced a non-historic window, staff has no objection to the retention of the double doors, with the proviso that all future exterior work be reviewed and approved by the HDLC.
