District: Uptown - Partial Control
Owner: Kevin M Murphy
HDLC Staff: Chad Spurlin
Rating: Contributing
Applicant: Eric McCutcheon
Permit #: 26-04467-HDLC
Description: Demolition of over 50% of the roof structure at Contributing-rated, one-story, single-family residential building.
HDLC Guidelines:
Section 12, Pages 23-24 of the Guidelines for New Construction, Additions and Demolition states that the demolition of all or portions of historic resources within a local Historic District or Landmark site are considered drastic actions, since they alter the character of the area. Once historic resources or buildings that contribute to the heritage of the community are destroyed, it is generally impossible to reproduce their design, texture, materials, details and their special character and interest in the neighborhood.
Staff Recommendations:
FEMA research indicated that 5818 Patton St. is a Creole cottage constructed between 1885-1895, making it one of the older structures within the Uptown Local Historic District.
The applicant is requesting approval to remove 58% of the roof structure to accommodate the construction of a new rear addition. The proposed renovation retains the original structure and demolishes the non-historic rear addition constructed/altered some time after 1951. Because the new addition is setback from and subordinate to the historic structure, as per HDLC Design Guidelines, Staff has no objection to the request for partial roof demolition.
Recommendation: No Objection
