World Art #1 - Japanese Theater Masks
Students will learn about two artists from India, Anish Kapoor (famous for Cloud Gate, aka "The Bean," in Chicago) and Bharti Kher (a well-known painter and sculpture artist). They will also learn about the cultural and spiritual significance of Mandala art, in some Indian religions, creating their own symmetrical and colorful Mandala designs.
7th Grade
2026 Project Archive
Projects descriptions are moved to this area, after the due date has passed. Late work is still accepted! Please communicate with Mrs. Lynch, if you need more time for project completion due to illness... or if you're just really taking your time to submit great work! Full credit may still be available, on a case by case basis.
Check out this video of the art room, before the 7th grade started working at stations on "mask creation day!"
After learning about Kitsune and Kabuki style masks and sketching an idea, students are building masks using plaster gauze on face forms. When not working in the mask-making station, they will color in Japanese artist coloring sheets (Hokusai and Yayoi Kusama) or write their names in Japanese characters using an online translation tool.
Students will learn about FOUR prominent street artists:
Shepard Fairey
Lady Pink
Keith Haring
Yours & Myne
They will then use what they've learned about these artists as inspiration, to design their own name in graffiti style lettering.
In this discussion, we'll also review the difference between vandalism and street art.
Mini Project:
Animal or Alien Scratchboards
Students practiced classroom safety using wood stylus tools, as well as proper planning (through the use of sketches/drafts) and transfer techniques in this fun, one-day project before Winter Break!
Choice or Chance Hearts
In celebration of Valentine's Day, students will play a game (sort of) to create a heart design. To complete the project, students will use either a choice (out of two options) or a chance (dice roll) to decide:
What media will they use? Watercolor Pencils OR Plain Colored Pencils
What type of shape will they create? Symmetrical & Geometric OR Asymmetrical & Organic
What colors will they use? Warm OR Cool
"About Me" Poster
In this project, students will first be expected to answer a set of "About Me" questions (i.e. favorite food, a hobby they like, a person they look up to). They will then pick EIGHT of their answers to include in a poster design.
When designing the poster, students will create eight sections (one for each "About Me" answer). They will use THREE or more different drawing media to fill in the sections of their poster.
Finally, the art teacher will assist students in printing a photograph of themself to attach to the poster.
