Health and safety considerations can have a large impact on the engineering industry as a whole, as these considerations make up many of the reasons that engineers are in need in this world. A direct example of this is the creation of the bioprocess engineering. Notes on a brief history of bioprocess engineers are given in the image below:
In addition to the complexity of bioprocesses and biochemical systems, the creation of the bioprocess engineer was the result of health and safety consideration during World War 2, where there was a growing need for antibiotics such as penicillin. At the time, the yield of penicillin was very low, and the historical need for antibiotics created a good reason to consider developing these processes more, which led to the realization of the concept of the bioprocess engineer. This is a clear example of how health and safety can have a large impact on engineering, to the point of creating new industries within it.
