This problem is a basic example of a fundamental aspect of many types of separations: equilibrium. This problem is a single stage equilibrium problem that is intended to manipulate a gas mixture of air and sulfur dioxide by bringing it in contact with water. This results in changes in composition as a result of equilibrium behavior of various mixtures. This problem takes advantage of equilibrium data of this system in order to find outlet molar flows and compositions from a single-stage equilibrium mixer. The solution of this problem takes advantage of numerical analysis tools in order to solve a non-linear equation that is difficult to solve by hand using Newton's Method in a MATLAB program.
