Description:
National Chiayi University (NCYU) has implemented a comprehensive Parking Demand Management and Sustainable Mobility Program to minimize the need for additional ground parking areas while promoting low-carbon transportation. Over the past three years, the university has maintained a stable ground parking area of 28,064 m² without constructing new parking facilities, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable land use and efficient campus transportation management.
Rather than expanding parking capacity, NCYU has continuously strengthened sustainable mobility initiatives to reduce dependence on private vehicles. Under the coordination of the Vehicle Management Committee, the university regularly reviews campus traffic conditions and parking management policies while enhancing alternative transportation options. Key initiatives include free university shuttle services, shared bicycles (YouBike), ride-sharing programs, electric shuttle vehicles, bicycle repair and tire-pumping stations, electric motorcycle charging facilities, solar-powered EV charging infrastructure, and pedestrian-friendly campus improvements. These integrated measures provide convenient and accessible alternatives to private vehicle use, effectively reducing parking demand across the campus.
Through the continuous implementation of these sustainable transportation programs, NCYU has successfully maintained its parking area at a sustainable level without further expansion during the past three years. By managing parking demand instead of increasing parking supply, the university optimizes land use, preserves campus green spaces, and supports long-term sustainable campus development. These initiatives contribute directly to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
