3. What do they usually eat nowadays?

4. Is lunch a large meal?

British Meals

Traditionally English people have three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Breakfast is served in the morning. It used to be a large meal with cereal, eggs and bacon, sausages, tomatoes. But such a large breakfast takes a long time to prepare is not very healthy. Nowadays, Britain’s most popular breakfast consists of cereal, toast with marmalade, juice and yogurt with a cup of tea or coffee.

Lunch is a light meal. Most people have no time to go back home for lunch so they eat at school, cafes, pubs or restaurants.

The main meal is dinner, which is usually between 6 and 7 p.m. A typical evening meal is a meat dish with vegetables and dessert.

The most important meal of the week is the Sunday dinner, which is usually eaten at 1 p.m. The traditional Sunday dish used to be roast beef, but nowadays pork, chicken or lamb are more common.

On Sunday evenings people have supper or high tea. The famous British afternoon tea is becoming rare, except at weekends.

“English Cookery and Meals”

With the exception of breakfast meals in England are much the same as in another countries. The usual meals in Great Britain are breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. The English are very fastidious about their meals and keep to their meal timesstrictly. Breakfast time is between 7 and 9 a. m. Many people like to begin it with porridge.

English people eat porridge with milk or cream and sugar, but the Scots —and Scotland is the home of porridge — never put sugar in it.

Then comes bacon and eggs, marmalade with toast and tea or coffee.

For a change you can have a boiled egg, cold ham or perhaps fish.

The two substantial meals of the day, lunch and dinner, are more or less the same.

Lunch is usually taken at one o'clock.

Many people, who go out to work, find it difficult to come home for lunch and go to a café or a restaurant, but they never miss a meal.

Lunch is a big meal — meat or fish, potatoes and salad, puddings or fruit are quite usual for it. In the afternoon, about four o'clock, the English have a cup of tea and a cake, or a slice or two of bread and butter.

Tea is very popular with the English; it may be called their national drink.

Tea is accompanied by ham, tomatoes and salad, bread and butter, fruit and cakes.

Dinnertime is generally about half past seven or later. In some houses dinner is the biggest meal of the day. They begin with soup, followed by fish, roast chicken, potatoes and vegetables, fruit and coffee. But in great many English homes the midday meal is the chief one of the day, and in the evening they only have light meal, for example, bread and cheese and a cup of coffee or cocoa and fruit.

Table Manners

Good table manners avoid ugliness. All rules of table manners are made to avoid it. To let anyone see what you have in your mouth is offensive. So is to make a noise. To make a mess in the plate is disgusting. So there are some rules how to behave yourself at the table:

Do not attract undue attention to yourself in public.

When eating take as much as you want, but eat as much as you take.

Never stretch over the table for something you want, ask. your neighbour to pass it.

Take a slice of bread from the bread-plate by hand, don't harpoon your bread with a fork.

Never read while eating (at least in company).

When a dish is placed before you do not eye it suspiciously as though it were the first time you had seen it, and do not give the impression that you are about to sniff it.

Chicken requires special handling. First cut as much as you can, and when you can't use knife or fork any longer, use your fingers.

The customary way to refuse a dish is by saying, "No, thank you" (or to accept, "Yes, please"). Don't say "I don't eat that stuff, don't make faces or noises to show that you don't like it.

In between courses don't make bread-balls to while the time away and do not play with the silver.

Do not leave spoon in your cup when drinking tea or coffee.

Do not empty your glass too quickly - it will be promptly refilled.

Don't put liquid into your mouth if it is already full.

Don't eat off the knife.

Vegetables, potatoes, macaroni are placed on your fork with the help of your knife.

If your food is too hot don't blow on it as though you were trying to start a campfire on a damp night.

Try to make as little noise as possible when eating.

And, finally, don't forget to say "thank you" .

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851)

J.M.W. Turner, a great romantic English landscape painter, was born in Devonshire, but when he was ten years old he went to live with his uncle in Middlesex, where he began to attend school. Very soon he began to take an interest in drawing, and during the summer holidays he would hike around his native! Devonshire, painting and drawing. Some of his drawings are dated 1787, when he was only 12 years of age. He I visited Oxford in 1789, Bristol in 1791, and Wales in 1792. His sketch-books, filled with drawings to be worked I up later into water-colours are preserved in the British 1 Museum.

In 1796 he began to exhibit oil paintings as well as water-colours at the Royal Academy. The first, "Fishermen at Sea", is now in the Tate Gallery.

After going to Yorkshire in 1797, to the Lake District in 1798 and to Scotland in 1801, he made long tours of France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy. But he never lost his interest in his own country, and made many visits to Wales, Devonshire and Cornwall, finding there many subjects for sketches and paintings.

Turner was above all a landscape painter, and in landscapes he was interested mainly in light and colour effects. One of his famous paintings is even called "Light and Colour". His work was highly praised6 by many I great critics.

Turner died in London in 1851 and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral. His pictures and drawings became the property of the nation.

The Role of Art in Our Life

Art is an essential part of each state, city and person`s life. The word “art” has a set of definitions, characteristics and peculiarities but each person imagines and interprets it in a special way.

People sometimes ask questions, “Is Dali`s painting art? And Shakespeare`s sonnets?” and without hesitation or doubt they give a positive answer to these questions. “And is a sunset, combining inexpressible saturation colours, art? And the first smile of a child?” Every person has his own answer to these questions because each of us has a personal view of the world and we look at surrounding reality from differentangles.

In my opinion, art is an imaginative reflection of reality, the main goal of which is interrelation of people with something wonderful, sensitive, interesting and beautiful, sometimes even unexplainable and contradictory. I think that cinema, painting, architecture and other kinds of art should arouse different emotions, feelings and thoughts in human soul and mind. Undoubtedly, the same work of art can stir up absolutely opposite feelings in people`s souls. For example, looking at the fresco “Last Judgement” by Michelangelo, the splendid and talented creator of the Renaissance era, in the Sistine Chapel, some people admire the beauty of conveyed images, other people think about the idea of world division into saints and sinners, someone thinks about the correlation between good and evil and this consequence of emotions and thoughts can be endlessly continued.

All kinds of art enrich our inner world and give us new knowledge about surrounding world. In works of art we see the author`s point of view on some situations or generalised knowledge of the creator, expressed with the help of artistic images. We can agree or disagree with the author`s opinion because each person has his own vision of the world and there is no right or wrong opinion – so many men, so many minds.

Art plays a great role in our life as long as it makes us think about significant problems and things, happening around us, till art excites human mind and does not leave us indifferent. Great classical writers such as Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Bulgakov and others touched very important problems of mankind in their works: love and hate, war and peace, guilt and repentance, talent and mediocrity, friendship and betrayal. I think that dramatic plots, described in works of these great authors, will help people to revalue their attitude to life, warn and stop them from cruel, thoughtless or unfair actions.

Influence of art on people is great. It can make us smile or cry, love or hate, be glad or be worried. It can inspire or make us pluck up our courage when we are spiritually and morally broken. Art sometimes can be the only means, which can inspire a heroic deed or support us in a difficult situation. It was so during the years of war. People were morally exhausted and suffered under the burden of losses. And when there was no force to fight and there was no force to live, art gave confidence to people, brought into the atmosphere of ruin and panic some inexpressible atmosphere of warmth and care, gave people “second wind” and made them live again, love and fight for happiness. Soldiers went to the battle, singing military songs about feat of arms, honour, motherland, love and about native home, and feelings, arousing by these songs, overshadowed feelings of fear, horror and pain.

In conclusion, I should say that irrespective of kind of art and its personal perception, it occupies a very important place in our life. Art is also an essential part of life and it has a direct influence on us.

The Louvre

The Louvre is the main landmark of Paris. It is one of largest museums in the world. The museum is situated in the Louvre Palace, which was once a fortress. This magnificent building exists from 1190. The King Philip August ordered to build it to defend Paris from the Vikings. In the 16th century the Louvre was reconstructed and became a royal palace. Later it became a museum of fine arts. It opened in 1793 with only 537 paintings to exhibit. The size of the collection greatly increased under the rule of Napoleon. For some time it was even named the Museum of Napoleon. Today it is one of most beautiful constructions in the world and most visited sight in France. The Louvre is lies on the right bank of the river Seine. It houses nearly 35 000 objects and covers the area of 60 600 square meters for exposition. Each year more than 8 million people visit the Louvre. The collection of the Louvre is divided into eight departments: Egyptian Antiquities, Greek, Roman and Etruscan Antiquities, New Eastern Antiquities, Islamic Art, Paintings, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Prints and Drawings. The Louvre houses some of the most famous pieces of existing art. For example, Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “Mona Lisa”. Nobody knows exactly, who is the woman on the painting. That’s why there are always debates and disputes around this piece. The symbol of the Louvre is the Inverted Pyramid which appeared in late 20th century. The Louvre museum collection contains the works of such renowned artists as Michelangelo, Raphael, Vermeer, Le Brun, Falconet, Rembrandt and many others.

I. Read the text and write answers to the questions below it.

In Germany a cleaner in the museum «very carefully»cleaned a little bit dirty bowl having destroyed a priceless work of art, the amount of insurance of which is 80 million euros.

The bowl was placed in the central hall of a museum in Dortmund, Germany. Its author is the modern German artist Mading. The work itself is a wooden structure, about 2.5 metres tall, a black bowl below a wooden frame, with white powder in the bowl. The work’s theme is «when the roof began to drip».That white substance in the small black basin represents the scene of the liquid dripping down from the roof. However, the museum cleaner did not treat it as part of an artistic creation, but took it for dust, so she wiped the basin clean. The museum’s curator, Professor Victoria Tengger, is both embarrassed and angry about the accident because the cleaning staff was not allowed to clean the exhibits, and they were even prohibited to touch them. It is not clear who will pay the amount of insurance, and what responsibility the cleaner will take. But this incident has caused the German people’s hot discussion. Many people think that the cleaner’s attitude showed that such «masterpiece» as a dirty bowl cannot be understood by the general public. And if in some people’s eyes, it is a masterpiece, however, for the majority it is just some dust.

1) Who destroyed a priceless work of art in the museum in Dortmund, Germany?

2) What is the amount of insurance for that work of art?

3) What does the white substance in the small black basin represent?

4) How did the museum’s curator feel about the incident?
