A Sun <
A Sun <
A Sun : How do families survive conflict?
NATWA-NJ is hosting a series of in-depth online film conversations as part of this year's Bridging Generations (世代對話) Project.
Our first featured film is A Sun (陽光普照), director Chung Mong-hong's acclaimed 2019 Golden Horse Award winner (鍾孟宏導演橫掃金馬獎之作).
Through its powerful storytelling and nuanced cinematography, the film portrays the unspoken tensions, expectations, and emotional struggles within an ordinary family. Beneath the sunlight lies a story about love, disappointment, identity, forgiveness, and the longing to be understood.
When sunlight shines on every corner, how do we mend the cracks hidden in the shadows?
As parents, how do we navigate the challenges of raising children with different personalities, strengths, and life paths? How do families learn to communicate when love itself is expressed in different ways?
We warmly invite you to spend an early summer afternoon with us. Through the lens of film, we will explore stories about family, expectations, belonging, and the many forms that love can take.

Six questions, many perspectives
(Family bonds, parent-child communication, physical and mental health, and the inclusiveness and burden of maternal love)
(Question 1: What does love look like)?
(What does "love" usually look like to you when you give it to your family or children)?
(In your life experience, what small things have others done—a warm word, a thoughtful gesture—that made you feel, in that moment, "Ah, I am loved")?
(Question 2: What exactly is wrong with this family)?
(After watching the movie, what do you think is the real problem in this family? What is the core of the problem)?
(Do Awen and Qin both love Ahe? How do they express their love differently? If you were Ahe, how would you feel about your father's stern and silent love versus your mother's inclusive and warm love)?
(Question 3: Why does sunlight cause suffocation)?
(Ah-hao seems well-behaved, excellent, and almost perfect, but what really broke him down)?
當一個人只能活在別人的期待裡,沒有陰影可以喘息,那會是一種什麼樣的壓力 ( Ah-hao said he "has no water tank to hide in, only sunlight, 24 hours a day, without interruption." What kind of pressure would it be if a person could only live according to the expectations of others, with no shadows to breathe in)?
(Question 4: If you were Qin, what would you do)?
(Qin decided to take the pregnant Xiaoyu home to care for her, and even supported her starting a family with Ahe. If you were Qin, would you make the same choice? Why?)
(Is Cai Tou a bad person)?
(What are your thoughts on the character Cai Tou? Where does his resentment and anger towards A He come from)?
(When a person is neglected and abandoned for a long time, will they gradually lose the ability to believe in love and hope)?
(Question 6: How did the ending make you feel)?
(In the film's final scene, to protect his son, Awen takes drastic measures to kill Caitou in the rainy night. What was your first feeling upon seeing this ending? Was it relief? Heaviness? Helplessness? Or heartache for everyone caught in the middle)?
最後 (One more question)
(In the journey of life, have we all been like Ah-He, Ah-Hao, Qin, Ah-Wen, or Cai-Tou? And do those most difficult family issues actually stem from the same longing – the desire to be understood and loved)?
A stolen bicycle and love along the ride
During our discussion of A Sun, an interesting shift occurred.
As participants reflected on the film's final scene—where Ah-He steals a bicycle and takes his mother, Qin-jie, for a leisurely ride—the heavy emotions surrounding family conflict, loss, responsibility, and regret gradually gave way to something gentler.
Yet each person saw a different story.
Some reacted immediately: "A child who steals a melon vine may grow up to steal a cow!"
Others laughed and admitted: "If this happened in real life, I'd probably scold him first. Stealing a bicycle is still stealing."
For others, however, the bicycle was never the point. What touched them most was seeing Ah-He carry his mother on the back seat.
"For years, she was the one taking care of him. In that moment, it felt as though he was saying, 'Mom, now it's my turn to take care of you.'"
For many participants, the scene symbolized not theft, but reconciliation—a child who had stumbled through life finally beginning to understand the sacrifices his mother had made.
Several participants reflected that children are often not very good at expressing love. Sometimes they cannot say "thank you." Sometimes they cannot offer a hug. Instead, they communicate their affection through awkward, imperfect gestures.
As the discussion deepened, different perspectives emerged. Some spoke about compassion. Others spoke about boundaries. Some believed love requires forgiveness. Others believed love also requires accountability.
Yet by the end of the conversation, there seemed to be a shared understanding:
The most precious moments in a family are rarely the perfect ones. They are the moments when, despite mistakes and hurt, people still choose to move closer to one another.
