Sat Jan 11, 9:30am: Annual Snowy Owl Pre-Prowl. This is the precursor to the annual February Snowy Owl Prowl: a quest for the much sought after visitor from the north. Bring lunch. Sat, Feb 22, 9:30am. Snowy Owl Prowl. It’s time once again to go east of Calgary in search of that popular winter visitor from the north, the Snowy Owl. Chances also for other birds such as Snow Bunting; Gyr and Prairie Falcon; Bald and Golden Eagle, Gray Partridge and Ring-necked Pheasant and others. Trip will go until about 4:00 P.M.. Bring lunch. Sat Mar 7, 06:30am - 09:00. Magpie Dispersal at Weaselhead Natural Area. Watch hundreds of Magpies leave their roosts at sunrise (7:06am) to disperse across the city. We will watch this phenomenon from the top of the hill then walk down into the Natural Area to see other birds & mammals. Meet in the parking lot on the W side of 37 St at 66 Av SW. This Park opened in June 2019 and already has 75 species recorded on Ebird, I will be attempting to get as complete a record of birds present in the first year of operation and would welcome others to join in the effort. Directions: bear right through Bragg Creek townsite, across the bridge, turn left and drive about 9 km to West Bragg Creek Provincial Recreation Area. Windy Point Hawk Watch – Multiple Dates Available
Peter Roxburgh has offered to lead people on a real birding adventure in the Sheep River Valley. He will take a maximum of two people on any one of the dates listed below. This location is west of Turner Valley. Accessing the site involves a strenuous 1,200 ft uphill walk that takes about 45 minutes. Participants must contact Peter for specific instructions and will meet at the trailhead. (Only share the drive with someone in your COVID-19 bubble.) This is a world-class hawk watching site with the chance of seeing up to 10 species of raptors during their fall migration. The dates are each Wednesday and Saturday until the end of October: September 16th, 19th, 23rd, 26th, 30th. October 3rd, 7th, 10th, 14th, 17th, 21st, 24th, 28th 31st, November 4th. Other birds that might be seen include: Gyrfalcon, Prairie Falcon, Rough-legged and Red-tailed Hawks, Gray Partridge, Ring-necked Pheasant, Snow Bunting, Horned Lark, and redpolls. Trip will run until about 4:00 P.M. Bring lunch. Mid-trip break probably in Strathmore or Langdon. Carpooling should only be done with occupants of the same household or bubble.
