The Health and Counseling Center (CHC) held a student health fair on the Redwood campus, specifically in the Student Events Center. The event was held to showcase all the services the CHC offers to students and help them learn more about them. The event included several tables with various health services the department offers at the school, along with some activities and snacks. There were also tables featuring third-party health services, free health programs, and related local services.
The event took place during my free time between two of my classes, so I was determined to visit as many tables as I could before my Music and Culture class started. I went to the event alone and met up with one of my friends, who was also in the class, and we both learned about the resources offered at the CHC.
Everyone was very friendly. The event was very well-organized, with plenty of tables so each resource had their own space. I was delighted to see how the students chatted with people and learned more about the benefits offered on campus. I believe these events are very important to hold because they allow students to know that resources and people are willing to help and support them with health issues. It helps make the process of confiding in someone about important matters less intimidating.
Students were given a "Health Fair Passport," which the vendors signed when the student approached the table to chat. By visiting all the tables, the passport allowed them to enter a raffle held by the CHC!
Spoiler alert: I didn't win 😢 but I visited all the tables and received incredible souvenirs!
I loved attending the event and learning more about the resources offered by the school's CHC. The kindness and patience the team showed throughout undoubtedly made us students feel confident talking to them.
I hope this type of event continues to be held because I'm sure it would greatly benefit students. It greatly helps reduce the stigma surrounding health and seeking support. Having an event dedicated to both topics helps us give them greater visibility and helps us see them with a sense of confidence and support. It helps us overcome the fear of asking questions and seeking support on health issues.
I am deeply grateful to the Center for Health and Counseling for providing support to SLCC students.
