American Alligator

The American alligator was severely threatened by overhunting until the mid-20th century, when laws were passed in the United States to protect endangered species from extinction. It has since rebounded in earnest, and is a common sight throughout the swampy southeastern US. Like their crocodile relatives, American alligators hunt submerged in water, waiting for prey to come and drink or otherwise come too close before striking.

The Dall sheep lives in the snowy mountains of Alaska and northwestern Canada. Like the closely-related bighorn sheep, the males - appropriately called rams - fight for mating rights by bashing each other head-on with their horns. Most Dall sheep have stark white fur, and the horns of male are big and heavily curved. The females, or ewes, have horns too, but they are comparatively much smaller.

The giant anteater, as its name suggests, has a diet made up entirely of ants (and termites). It uses its massive claws to tear into anthills and termite mounds, and its long, conical head houses a sticky tongue; perfect for scooping up tasty bugs. The anteater's long hair and tough skin protect it from insect bites. It is solitary by nature, and likes to use its bushy tail as a makeshift blanket when it sleeps. Baby anteaters ride on their mothers' backs for protection.
