Three months ago, the first major update for Folksy Facelift was released, and at least from what I've surmised, folks have enjoyed it - if you're reading this and have tried it out for yourself, I hope you liked it. FF in general is the end result of three years of fooling around and eventually shifting to a full-blown patch, two years of navigating ridiculous obstacles to bring everyone an update and, overall, five years of getting a better understanding of not only how the game works, but also learning all sorts of quirks of the natural world. (like how stupid the concept of clean-cut "biomes" is)
That said, however, I would like to say upfront that, at least for the foreseeable future, Zoo Tycoon 2: Folksy Facelift will not be updated any further. My priorities have shifted away from continuing work on it, and as it stands, I've come to see it as an unwieldy, bloated mess of incompatibilities with other mods and a million ideas all smashed into one monolithic package. In the context of Zoo Tycoon 2, I'd much rather focus on smaller projects.
But with Folksy Facelift done and dusted, what's next for Nano's Zoo 2 Zone?
Note: all screenshots shown below are work-in-progress and may not reflect the final mods
Fleeting flamingos got you down? Spent a fortune on panthers that aren't as popular as you hoped? Guests cheaping out on dolphin donations? If you've got gameplay guff with Zoo Tycoon 2, Vanilla-Friendly Fixes is here to try and set things right.
Shifting away from the sweeping changes made by Folksy Facelift, the Vanilla-Friendly Fixes modpack focuses on quality of life improvements and fixes to glaring oversights and actual problems with the game above all else. Instead of trying make the game closer to the real world, for the most part it runs with its eccentricities and tries to make things more coherent. Sure, a couple dinosaurs' sizes have been tweaked, but don't go in thinking your Utahraptor will be any less fond of glaciers and tamarack trees!
Another goal here is for VFF to play nice with other downloads. Custom fossils can show up in the Extinct Animals campaigns, there's even a measure in place to try and curb an EA-born problem that makes guest run away from contained animals!
Even more carnivores are happy to make dummies out of prey dummies.
Finally, a little respect for lamp posts and flowerbeds!
Be not afraid - if an escaped animal isn't a threat to a guest, it won't scare them.
Whenever it comes out (I won't dare commit to a specific date - assume it'll drop as a surprise without any warning until I say otherwise), it'll be provided in a modular format, split between the expansions and with a couple optional bonus parts. In case you're wondering, Vanilla-Friendly Fixes will absolutely, definitely not be compatible with Folksy Facelift, and there probably aren't very many "hacks" that it'll get along with, either.
That said, speaking of that...
A common complaint I've seen with Zoo Tycoon 2: Folksy Facelift is that all of its content is inseparable; you have the animal remakes, the new plants, the behavioral changes and a couple of new animals all in one giant mishmash of a package, with no options to download anything included by itself.
Though I won't be releasing everything I made for the pack like this, the release of Vanilla-Friendly Fixes will also mark the start of little Folksy Facelift standalone packs and solo downloads. The first of these will be a sort of Ultimate Collection booster pack including the elephant seal and the guest gate.
What else from the folkiest facelift around will be split off? Stay tuned...
(It bears repeating that these also won't be compatible with Folksy Facelift, though given the nature of this specific beast, I think it goes without saying)
That's a pretty good question - truth be told, waning drive to make things for ZT2 has made it a tossup on whether there will be much of anything besides what is outlined above. I can say with confidence, however, that there are things going on behind the scenes besides QOL patches and miniature FF releases. I won't say exactly what those things are just yet, but there's undeniably movement.
Keep an eye on Nano's Zoo 2 Zone for any new goodies that might pop up. You never know when something new will wash up on the shore!
