Abstract
The purpose of this research was to investigate the perspectives of graduates, and factors influencing the career choices of the top-tier university graduates in Bangladesh, specifically examining their reluctance to pursue primary school teaching. Through comprehensive analysis, the study aimed to identify challenges and propose recommendations to enhance the attractiveness of primary education as a profession among this demographic. Moreover, this study also aimed to suggest that policymakers decide on the primary education sector of Bangladesh, rethinking the budget, planning, and so on to attract fresh top-university-graduates to the primary school teaching sector so that the best guidance of the talents is ensured for the tenders of a nation. While ample research had delved into the broader factors influencing career decisions in Bangladesh, this study addressed the significant gap in understanding why graduates from prestigious institutions exhibited reluctance to join teaching roles in primary education as their dream career. Utilizing a comprehensive online questionnaire and open-ended interview questionnaire, responses from 21 participants were analyzed to unveil intricate patterns and recurring themes. The study revealed a predominant inclination among participants toward government jobs, particularly in the civil service sector, driven by motivations such as job security, social status, and financial stability. Contrastingly, primary school teaching was met with reservations, attributed to factors such as lower salaries, limited facilities, and a perceived lack of social status compared to alternative professions like the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS). Challenges and limitations in pursuing a career in primary school teaching were elucidated, emphasizing the need for substantial improvements in financial incentives and the overall working environment. Respondents expressed concern about the low salary, lack of promotion opportunities, societal perceptions, and the demanding nature of handling young children. The importance of salary in attracting top-tier graduates to primary school teaching was underscored, with participants suggesting a need for higher starting salaries and increased budget allocation. Recommendations for authorities included enhancing social recognition, raising job status on the national pay scale, and providing better working conditions. This research contributed valuable insights into the complex landscape of career choices among top-tier university graduates in Bangladesh, shedding light on the specific challenges hindering the attractiveness of primary school teaching. The findings advocated for strategic interventions to transform primary education into an appealing and respected profession, aligning with the nation's educational development goals.
