It is important to understand the effect that social media has on me and others. This module helped me to understand some of that dynamic.
After I took the
"Am I ADDICTED to social media?" QUIZ
I discovered
You have a HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP with social media - well done! [Time To Log Off Social Media Addiction Quiz]
I was happy to discover that I have a healthy relationship with social media. The results stated,
Congratulations! Psychologists estimate that as many as 5 to 10% of Americans meet the criteria for social media addiction today. But luckily, that's not you! Not checking social media every few minutes doesn't make you feel anxious, as you prefer to live 'in the moment' rather than through your apps. You use social media to your advantage, at work and to connect with friends and family, but you know when to put it away. Keep it up!
I do know that I want to keep a handle on my social media involvement. I used to spend alot more time reading than I do now. I know that I am happier when I read then when I spend too much time on social media.
I picked the demographic data as the most interesting statistic in the pew survey. There is a wide variety for persons and what social media they use based on age, gender, or ethnicity. I am a bit unusual in that I am older than most Instagram users. I might have tried Instagram because I did have children who were early adopters of Instagram, but the other reason to adopt it was that I have grandchildren that I can find pictures of on Instagram, but not on Facebook. That is a powerful motivator.
I think that social media can have both good and destructive impacts. I know that for me, it's a source of information and a way to stay in touch with friends and family in ways that would be difficult to do otherwise. I love to see vacation pictures, pictures of my grandchildren, and useful information. I hate that social media can be a source of disinformation, though, and that I have to ask myself whether a source is trustworthy or not constantly. If I have to remind myself, I always wonder how many people aren't doing that and assume something is true. Social media helps some to live in an echo chamber so that I might never hear anything that disagrees with my already held opinions, which is not healthy either.
I learned that while I may have a pretty healthy relationship with social media that I should still be cautious. If I value reading more than I need to make a plan to ensure that I'm not devoting all my spare time to social media.
