Carpool

Actually, all of the other great transportation options presented here are a lot better than driving. The MVHS attendance area is really not that big, and most people can get to school quite conveniently by bike or bus. So before you read any further, please look at the other options and see which one will work for you. We can help -- just email us with your questions and we'll help you figure out how you can set up an easy, pleasant commute routine that doesn't require a car.

If you absolutely must drive or be driven to school, carpooling is the way to go. Carpooling saves you time, effort and money. If you carpool with just one other person, you can cut your environmental impact in half! And you can share the cost of a parking permit.

Carpool safely

With so many people arriving at school at the same time, there's a lot to keep track of.

1. Pedestrians have the right of way on sidewalks and in crosswalks, including unmarked intersections such as in residential areas. Do not advance across a crosswalk until pedestrians have successfully crossed.

2. When a road is too narrow to allow bikes and cars side-by-side safely, watch for cyclists since they can legally ride in the center of the lane.

3. Before turning, yield to oncoming bicyclists just as you would to oncoming motorists.

4. Check mirrors for cyclists advancing on either side.

5. Leave at least 3 feet of passing space between the right side of your vehicle and a cyclist, unless it is unsafe to do so.

6. After passing a cyclist, check over your shoulder to make sure you have allowed adequate distance before merging back into the lane.

7. Before opening your car door, check for bicyclists going by.

TIP: Stop chatting as you approach the school, concentrate on your surroundings and ask your carpool partner to act as an extra pair of eyes and ears to make sure you and everyone around you stays safe.
