Welcome! MVHS Carbon-Free Commute is a PTSA group helping and encouraging everyone in the MVHS community get to school in a fun, healthy and environmentally-friendly way. There are so many great reasons to walk, bike, bus or carpool to school.

Bike Service Day a big success!

Students, staff and families got ready to go back to school at our free bike service event at MVHS Aug. 7, 2021. Even MVLA Trustee Sanjay Dave came by for a tune-up! Huge thanks to our volunteer mechanics who worked nonstop for over 3 hours! If you didn't make it to the event and still need your bike checked or repaired, email us at mvhscfc@gmail.com.

NEED A BIKE?

We still have bikes available for students who need transportation to school. If you can't afford to buy a bike, please go see either Ms. Huong Vo (student services coordinator) or Ms. Alma Ruelas (bilingual coordinator) and they will work with us to get you a bike that's the right size, along with a helmet and lock.

If you still need a bike and can afford to purchase one:

Community Cycles of California, a new nonprofit social enterprise in San Jose, has refurbished bikes for sale. It's through their generosity that we are able to offer more bikes & helmets to MVHS students in need, and your purchase supports their charitable work.

Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange is another wonderful nonprofit that has also helped us out. They also sell refurbished bikes to support their mission.

The Bicycle Outfitter is the closest bike shop to MVHS and they have generously checked and tuned up bikes for us. You can ask them if they are still offering a 10% discount on accessories for MVHS students.

In Memory of Scott Chan

Scott Chan, MVHS alumni parent who founded Carbon-Free Commute in 2007, and his daughter Kendra Chan (a 2011 MVHS graduate) perished in the Southern California dive boat fire on September 2, 2019. We send our deepest condolences to the Chan family and friends. Scott was the driving force behind the creation of the CFC program and we are incredibly grateful for all he did for our community.

CARBON-FREE COMMUTE / BIKE TO WORK DAY 2019

Our Carbon-Free Commute Day in May 2019 coincided with the official Bay Area Bike to Work Day. All carbon-free commuters (including bus, walk, skateboard etc.) were greeted with snacks, drinks, treats and more at our tables in the morning before school. Look how much fun our former MVLA superintendent Dr. Jeff Harding had!

Earth Week 2019

Congrats to our fantastic Environmental Club for a great Earth Week! Every day from April 22-26 had a different theme, from Meatless Monday to Fracking Friday. Thursday April 25 was Carbon-Free Commute themed and students were offered snacks, biking and bus info, and free bike accessories like blinky lights and patch kits. Thanks to everyone who wrote a Postcard to the Principal -- your ideas are what will save our planet!

Welcome new Staff Bike Ambassador!

Biology teacher and dedicated bike commuter Lyuda Shemyakina is MVHS's new Staff Bike Ambassador, available to answer questions and provide information to staff who are thinking of biking to school. If you need some advice or encouragement to get started, just reach out to her!

EXTRA BIKE LIGHTS & REFLECTORS

If you didn't get a free rear blinky light or reflector(s) at one of our distribution events, send us an email and we can give you an extra one. If you still need a headlight, try one of great nonprofit bike organizations or regular bike shops in the area. If you can't afford a headlight, let us know and we'll get one for you.

BUS

The bus is a great option if you live too far to bike. It only costs $1.25 for students! Click here for the route and schedule.
