Silence is also an important part of music. A note does not have to start immediately after the end of a previous one. There can be silence between them. A rest is the graphical symbol used to mark silence. For each rhythmic value of a note, there exists a rest that is used to mark the silence of the same rhythmic value. This is shown in the next figure.

Like notes, rests can also be dotted and the same principles hold for determining their rhythmic values.
