PART I GENERAL MUSIC THEORY

In part I of this book, concepts from general music theory are defined to help readers to prepare for the study of harmony. The most important concepts for studying harmony are keys and chords. They are explained in detail. A prerequisite for understanding them is the knowledge of intervals and scales. Thus, they are also explained.

Since illustrating theory with examples taken from the scores of great composers is an important goal for this book, many concepts related to reading scores are also explained.

In the introduction, the physical characteristics of sound and music are explained together with one of the most basic principles of music, the so-called octave equivalence principle.  Considering all this, the author hopes that this book can be of good use to all musical enthusiasts having a desire to learn harmony, even when they are not proficient in reading scores or basic music theory. Advanced readers may skip many chapters from the part I.
