Dirty John is a podcast about a John Meehan, drug user, murderer, and known conman - and how he tricked a family into believing a story about his past.
I found the family's situation with the mom's new boyfriend incredibly realistic. It wasn't a crime that was totally crazy or unbelievable... it seemed like it could happen to anyone and that's what made this case even more terrifying. The weird interactions between John and family members, the awkwardness that only outsiders noticed, the normal-but-not situations.
I also found the case hilarious. For example, John was a dude who went out, drives around all day, in scrubs, to trick his family that he's a doctor. I can't even imagine what a (clearly psychotic) hoot this guy probably is.
I also can't help but notice that the mom should have asked the questions that she didn't earlier on. It makes me think that it might be easier to commit these kind of crimes among rich people than poor people since once they believe someone is part of the same world as them, they are less likely to question it. Unsure about my (probably classist) commentary.
