University of Northern Philippines (UNP) - Laboratory School is a laboratory school established as part of the university’s commitment to strengthening teacher education and improving the quality of basic education. The school is located in Tamag, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, and operates under the supervision of the University of Northern Philippines.
The school was established to serve as a training and practice venue for pre-service teachers, providing opportunities to apply educational theories, teaching strategies, and classroom management skills in an authentic classroom environment. Since its establishment, the Laboratory School has functioned as a partner institution for teaching internships, classroom observations, and educational research.
The Laboratory School offers complete basic and secondary education, serving learners from Kindergarten to Senior High School. The grade levels include:
Kindergarten: Provides a foundational early childhood education for young learners
Elementary School: Continues basic education, including observation of Kindergarten 1 and 2 classes
Secondary School: Part of the basic (Grades 7–10) and senior high school (Grades 11–12) education system, which is integrated into one continuum

The academic support system at the University of Northern Philippines Laboratory School plays an important role in supporting effective teaching and learning. The availability of essential classroom facilities and technological resources helps create an interactive and engaging learning environment for students.
At the UNP Laboratory School, academic support can be seen through well-equipped classrooms, learning media such as projectors and whiteboards, and access to various teaching materials. In addition, cooperating teachers and school staff provide valuable guidance, supervision, and feedback to student teachers during the teaching practicum.
Teachers also prepare instructional materials in advance to ensure that lessons are well-structured and aligned with the learning objectives. These supports contribute to a more effective learning process and help students better understand the lesson content.
As a student who had the opportunity to conduct teaching practice at the University of Northern Philippines Laboratory School, I observed that the teaching system implemented at the school is well-designed and well-structured. The allocation of one hour for each subject provides sufficient time for teachers to explain the material, conduct practical activities, and build active interaction with students in the classroom.
In addition, the implementation of teaching and learning activities from Monday to Thursday demonstrates effective academic time management. Meanwhile, extracurricular activities conducted on Fridays provide students with valuable opportunities to develop their interests, talents, and social skills outside of academic learning.
In my opinion, this teaching system shows that the school not only focuses on academic achievement but also pays attention to the overall development of students. With a balance between classroom learning and extracurricular activities, the learning environment becomes more engaging, enjoyable, and supportive of students’ holistic development.
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) Laboratory School implements the MATATAG Curriculum for Kindergarten through Grade 8, while Grades 9 to 12 follow the K–12 Curriculum.
The MATATAG Curriculum is the Philippines’ newly launched curriculum framework introduced by the Department of Education (DepEd) to strengthen the quality of education. This curriculum emphasizes the development of essential skills such as literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and the formation of national character among students. The acronym MATATAG represents Makabansa (patriotic), Makatao (people-centered), Makakalikasan (environmentally aware), and Matatag (resilient).
Meanwhile, the K–12 Curriculum is an educational system that covers Kindergarten to Grade 12, which consists of approximately 13 years of formal schooling. This system is also implemented in several countries such as the United States and Canada. The K–12 Curriculum is designed to gradually develop students’ foundational knowledge and skills, preparing them for higher education, employment, or entrepreneurship, while promoting critical thinking, creativity, and other 21st-century competencies.
