The College of Teacher Education organized a cultural event titled “Katrini and Gabriela Day: A Cross-Cultural Celebration of Women's Empowerment among Indonesians and Ilocanos.” The program was held at the CTE Academic Building and featured various activities such as lectures, cultural discussions, food sharing, and traditional games.
This event aimed to bring together Indonesian and Filipino cultures by highlighting the stories of influential female figures from both countries. Indonesian students presented the life of Raden Ajeng Kartini, a Javanese heroine known for her contributions to women’s education and empowerment in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, students from University of Northern Philippines shared the story of Gabriela Silang, a prominent historical figure in the Philippines who is widely recognized as a symbol of courage and leadership in the Ilocos region.
Through this activity, the participants celebrated the shared values of Indonesian and Ilocano women. The event emphasized how women's empowerment plays an important role in strengthening families, preserving cultural heritage, and contributing to the development of society and the nation.
The cultural exchange also included the sharing of traditional food and local games. Students from University of Northern Philippines prepared Ube Biko, a well-known Filipino dessert made from purple yam and sticky rice. On the other hand, Indonesian students introduced Mie Ayam, a popular Indonesian noodle dish served with seasoned chicken.
In addition to the culinary exchange, participants also experienced traditional Filipino games. UNP students introduced Indonesian participants to local games such as Patintero, allowing everyone to enjoy fun activities while learning more about Filipino culture.
The event concluded with a souvenir presentation ceremony for the Indonesian students. The ceremony was led by the dean, vice dean, and the program head of the University of Northern Philippines as a gesture of appreciation and remembrance of the cultural exchange activity.
