Gauging student needs:
Know-Wonder-Learn Chart: This is a common method that many of us have used. During a lecture or a video, students are asked to make a 3 section chart where they will write what they already know, what they have questions about, and what they learned. This allows teachers to know the prior knowledge of the students and also what they are struggling with or are interested in learning.
Encouraging self-direction and collaboration:
Class Discussion: After a lecture or a few minutes before class ends, I will set up a class discussion. Where I will have each student state something they learned from the day's lesson and I will have every state any questions they have or something they struggled with. This will allow students to share their thoughts and hear from their peers as well.
Checking Understanding:
Choice Exit Tickets: With choice exit tickets, students will be required to demonstrate their understanding before they leave the class. Like a regular exit ticket, the choice exit ticket allows students to show their understanding in the way that works best for them. They can make notes of what they understand and learned or write a summary, or even draw a picture of what they found interesting. They have the option to complete the exit ticket in whatever way is easiest for them.
