Explore.org is a website or an app that allows you to see live cams of animals from all over the world. You can also view highlights from various streams. These live cams could enhance your science teaching especially when it comes to life science! Check out my live cam page to learn how I would use these live cams with students.
This is a fun and catchy song that will help students remember all of the aspects of ecosystems.
Students need to understand that ecosystems are made up of abiotic and biotic factors. Both are important for organisms to survive! This video highlights these concepts.
This website offers a huge collection of photos and videos showcasing various phenomena. It also includes phenomena based learning resources for how to use phenomena to drive student questions in the classroom. Check out my Phenomena page to learn more about how you can incorporate phenomena in science instruction.
Ck12.org is an awesome website with life science content readings for grade levels K-5. These are great resources for students to read after they have completed an inquiry based investigation. As a teacher, you can assign resources and additional videos or a PLIX. A PLIX, created by cK-12, is an interactive modality that allows learners to play with the ideas in a concept.
Youtube offers a wide variety of 360 videos. These are a great alternatives to use if your students or school doesn't have access to Virtual Reality apps. Below are two of my favorite Youtube 360 videos.
Watch meerkats play with each other and the crew, in the desert, their natural habitat!
Take a deep dive in the Antarctic ocean and learn about the organisms that live there!
This video shows a time-lapse of two anemones fighting. This would be a great video to showcase a natural phenomenon with students and explore the ecological concept of competition.
This is great video to showcase various symbiotic relationships. It would be great to supplement an inquiry based investigation on symbiotic relationships!
This video shows the symbiotic relationship, parasitism. Students might be grossed out, but they'll be engaged!
This is a great video to show and explain the concept of phototropism. Have students grow their own mini gardens. While they are completing this authentic learning experience, have students make observations about the direction the plants are growing in. After this learning experience, students can watch this video to get a deeper understanding.
There are so many different way you can use Google Expeditions in ecology! This Virtual Reality (VR) app can bring you through various ecosystems and habitats. Use a Google Cardboard for a complete immersive experience.
You can also use it for Augmented Reality (AR) stimulations. Have a bee come to life or explore the body systems!
It's really easy to make time-lapse videos with the Stop Motion Studio app. It is a great tool to use in ecology learning because students can document different things and then create videos using their photographs (i.e. plant life cycle, changes in nature, changes to food over time, etc.) Check out this video I created of a pea plant.
Google Tour Creator is awesome to use when learning about various ecosystems and habitats. Teachers can create one for students to explore, or older students can create their own. Check out my Local Habitats Tour Page to see the Google Tour I created!
This video explains the chemical changes that cause leaves to change color in the fall.
This video explains what angiosperms (flowering plants) are. It also shows and describe the parts of angiosperms, as well as the process of fertilization.
Namoo is an interactive map wheres students can explore the structures of plants. Students can even explore the cells of leaves and process of fertilization.
In this PLIX from CK-12, students can explore how the plants adapt and leaves change color based upon the season. You will need to create a free account to access the PLIX.
Crash Course Kids are free, educational videos that can be viewed by teachers or students. Click this to bring you a playlist of ecology videos.
This website is awesome for content readings on ecology. After students complete an investigation, you could have them read some articles from National Geographic Kids in order to gain a deeper understanding. They have awesome readings on several habitats!
