Censorship has been a common issue in the world for decades, and it has serious negative effects on society when implemented at a large level. While it is less serious in academic settings, censorship is still often an issue as it seeks to prevent people from seeing the truths of the world. Censorship can lead to misinformation and ignorance, and it rarely, if ever, has any true benefits.
Censorship is something that has always bothered me to my core. I have people in my life who grew up not knowing about the LGBTQ+ community, not knowing about mental health, not knowing about so many different things that are a part of life. It has caused them to struggle in life with acceptance, and I know I'm guilty of similar things. Censorship does nothing but close your mind to different viewpoints and possibilities in the world. I hate feeling like a bigot when I don't understand or accept something, and I hope that opening up the world to people through books and information will help.
