Fossils

S3E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information on how fossils provide evidence of past organisms.
a. Construct an argument from observations of fossils (authentic or reproductions) to communicate how they serve as evidence of past organisms and the environments in which they lived. Note: Students should engage in argumentation in which they evaluate and critique arguments and revise their own arguments based on feedback.
I can describe a fossil (authentic and/or reproductions). I can recognize that fossils serve as evidence of past organisms. I can recognize that fossils serve as evidence of past environments. I can develop a claim of how fossils serve as evidence of past organisms and their environments. I can support my claim with evidence of how fossils serve as evidence of past organisms and their environments. I can construct an argument (written or oral) from observations that fossils serve as evidence of past organisms and their environments.
b. Develop a model to describe the sequence and conditions required for an organism to become fossilized. (Clarification statement: Types of fossils (cast, mold, trace, and true) are not addressed in this standard.)
I can identify the sequence of events required for an organism to become fossilized. I can identify the environmental conditions required for an organism to become fossilized. I can explain the process of fossilization for a specific fossil of an organism. I can develop a model to show the sequence and conditions required for an organism to become fossilized.
