WHAT IS AN EARTHQUAKE?
An Earthquake is a sudden shift in the Earth's crust that causes the ground to shake and vibrate violently. Most earthquakes happen near faults. Faults are large cracks in The Earth's crust.
There are three basic things that happen when the edge of one plate meets another.
The plates can push up against each other (convergent plate boundary)
The plates can move apart (divergent plate boundary)
The plates can slide past each other (transform plate boundary) - cause of earthquakes
TECTONIC PLATES ARE AN EXPLANATION FOR THE MOVEMENT OF THE EARTH'S SURFACE
The crust of the earth is broken up into pieces called tectonic plates. These plates fit together like jigsaw puzzle pieces.
Continental crust is light and ‘floats’ on top of the denser heavier layers underneath.
Oceanic crust is denser and heavier because it is made of basalt magma upwelling from the mantle.
Convection currens drive the movement of the Earth's rigid tectonic plates in the planet's fluis molten mantle.
