Digestive System

punaha nakunaku

Digestion (nakunaku) is the breakdown of large food molecules into smaller ones so it can pass through the walls of the gut into the blood as NUTRIENTS.

The main organs of the human digestive system form a tube that runs from the mouth to the anus. These function to ingest and digest food, absorb nutrients and remove undigested waste. Organs such as the liver, gall bladder and pancreas are also involved as they secrete enzymes and bile which aid in the digestion of food.

DIGESTION BEGINS IN THE MOUTH (waha) AND ENDS IN THE ANUS (nono)

Digestion starts in the mouth (waha) where food is broken into smaller pieces as people chew. Food is mixed with saliva which contains an enzyme called amylase. Amylase starts to break down carbohydrates in the food.
