As our students enter the sixth grade, we begin our first rigorous examination of human history. We will start in prehistory, in the many years without written language. We study how civilizations form, and how we both shape our environment and are shaped by it. We will then turn our attention to the six cradles of human civilization: the Fertile Crescent, Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, and the Americas. We will follow the stories of these places until the beginning of the modern era and end our year with a study of the rise of the first great empires.
