Darrell Scobee: Called to Serve

As a rancher, Darrell Scobee says his life was “all about me." Raised in the Baptist Church from the age of 10, he drifted away as he grew older. He partied so hard that no one thought he would reach his age of 68. But when Carolyn, his wife of 47 years, faced her first, and then a second, bout of breast cancer, he sought to restore his faith in God. Since he was baptized at the end of 2024, he has been reading Scripture daily and attending Bible study twice a week. He volunteers three days a week at the The Ministry Center’s food pantry in Maryville, Mo., checks in often on Duane Clark, his 93-year-old neighbor, and continues to support Carolyn in her fight with cancer. "I love it that people feel that they can call me if they have a need, because it's what we're here for,” he says. “We're not here to try to run this journey all on our own. That's not what God calls us to do.”
Darell Scobee, 68, attends Bible study at Countryside Christian Church in Maryville, Mo. The session is one of the two weekly Bible study groups he participates in.
Darrell, left, and Jacob Duty load groceries for a client of The Ministry Center’s food pantry. Darrell volunteers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. “If you see a need, you're called to fill the need,” he says.

Left: Darrell congratulates Duane Clark after losing three out of five Chinese checkers games in their apartments’ community center. Darrell sees his 93-year-old friend — a former minister and missionary — almost every day, and studies the Bible with him once a week. “I need more people like Duane Clark in my life,” Darrell says. “He’s a gem.”
Right: Darrell reads Scripture while studying the Bible at Countryside Christian Church on Sept. 23, 2026. “No God, no peace. Know God, know peace. That’s the magical equation right there, for me,” Darrell said.
Darrell bows his head as Brandon White prays following Bible study at Countryside Christian Church. Brandon is one of the many people Darrell drives to doctor appointments and other errands.
Darrell greets his visiting grandson Liam, 3, and his son Dylan in front of Darrell’s apartment.
Carolyn, Darrel’s wife of 47 years, rests on their couch with their 10-year-old cat, Sam, who is always a comfort when she is not feeling well. Carolyn’s bouts with breast cancer put Darrell on the path back to having faith in God. “It kind of opens your mind to not here, but to the hereafter,” he says.
Darrell stretches while cooking his oatmeal as Carolyn searches for photos in a drawer in their apartment. The two have lived there for a year.
Darrell studies Scripture in his bedroom. One of his favorite verses is Matthew 6:33: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." “I kind of put a little different twist on it from time to time, but that's my go-to,” he said.
Darrell jokes with his neighbor, Pam Rue, on his patio. Darrell frequently sits there and watches his neighbors coming and going at the community center across the way.
